next catalogue??

I have recently posted re looking for credit for buying a car and tge prispect of getting a mortgage after 6 years of becoming br. I have spoken to cab who has told me that once thd 6 years are over, and with a deposit and dealing with my finances well then there is a good chance that I will be able to buy a house again.

I went br in june 2011. I have had to move house and so I have only been living here for a year. I want to build up a positive credit history now. As I said before it is lovely not oweing money to anyone however I am trying to think of the future. I was advised to get a credit card to buikd credit but when I checked on money supermarket for a card tgst would suit me it came back that I was not eligble for any of them. It did not even ask me about br. I earn £40k and i have a phobe cobtract which is paid by dd. I do not know if the fact that i am renting and have been in 2 rentals inthe last few years is going against me. Can anyone advise me on how to move forward. I was thinking is there any point in applying for a next catalogue or would i be rejected for that.

Feeling lost at the moment and can not see the way forward.:-(
any advice would be great .

  • Have you followed the credit clean up sticky? You're likely to be accepted by Vanquis, Aqua or Capital One if your credit file is nice and squeaky clean.

Also are you on the Electoral Roll at your current address?

I was declared bankrupt Dec 2008, and had early discharge June 2009. Since then, I applied for a Vanquis CC (same reason as you, to build a new credit history) I got it and pay it off in full every month by DD (they probably hate me as I make them no interest!!) I also have a Next account, accidentally really after ordering a few things and it automatically created one (or maybe I did something wrong?!) which has a crazy limit of £5000!!!! Obviously I have no intention of running it up to that, or the limit on my Vanquis card which is I think about 2k.
But, I had no problem obtaining either of these, it was probably about a year after the discharge I would think. Not everyone thinks an old bankrupt is a bad financial risk - IMO we are better, as we KNOW the pitfalls and wouldn't dare get into trouble again! (Pity not everyone thinks the same!)

    Hi,

It might be worth considering before you apply for credit are you on the electoral role at your current address? This will greatly increase your chances of being accepted. Also, asking your bank might be an option to get a credit card as some banks base their decision based on your history with them rather than you credit file.

Also you might want to have a look at https://www.noddle.co.uk where you can obtain a copy of your credit report for free.

    Hope this helps.

Since posting I applied online for an aqua credit card but was automatically rejected. I thought I would try vanquis and if I was rejected I would give up. They said my application was successful but they would have to ring to speak to me to complete. I now am waiting and hope this is only a formality. I am just going to wait to hear from them before feeling relieved that my life seems to be moving forward. We will just have to wait and see.

You really really need to check you are on the electoral role and you also really REALLY need to stop applying for credit until you can find out why you are being rejected. Find out if you are on the electoral role (I suspect you are not) and also as mentioned already you need to check your file.

Also please be careful because 'just a few things on credit' can spiral into the abyss of desolation as I am sure you know but as long as you are careful not to end up in the sam situation that led you to BR I am sure you will be fine. Good luck, chin up! :)

I really appreciate everyone's comments. It is so helpful to hear what people have to say as everyone learns from their own experiences.

Update- Just been accepted by Vanquis after a phonecall where I repeated the answers I gave online.

Sorry for not replying before- I am on the electoral role. I also know it sounds as if I am going crazy for credit but I have only applied to Aqua( which I think I was turned down as I only gave my income when asked for the household income- how silly!!!!) When I applied to Vanquis I included my partners income. And I have been accepted.

The interest rate is 39%. I only intend to use it for small amounts each month and pay it all off.

I also have applied for my credit report as I am going to begin a clean up. I hope it is straight forward- but I will deal with what ever I need to.

    Thanks:)

Nice to hear from you, I am very pleased that you got accepted, now you can begin your road to recovery. I'm still at the stage where I'm scared witless to ever get credit again so please forgive my worrying that you were applying for lots, its great you only applied to those two and requesting your files and going for the clean up is excellent - theres plenty of people on here that can help and Fermi has an excellent guide to clearing up your post bankruptcy file.

I've got a free noddle account and don't get me wrong it's very useful. But I do find a lot of lenders don't report to them, over the likes of Equifax and Experian - so worth getting a statutory report from these as well.

Montymud- I really appreciate the advice people post on here. If it was not for this forum I do not know where I would be now. I have gained so much understanding from people on here like yourself. :A

I was petrified applying for credit and really considered not applying for Vanquis after I had been turned down by Aqua but I am also spending so much time thinking about how I move on financially for the future. Hopefully I will use my past experiences to make positive choices in the future. I have such a long way to go but I feel at last I have started moving forward.
