Kate.... you need to save for the future. Ditch the expensive wedding and expensive holiday and expensive gadgets.
Pay off your debts ASAP. Student loan to pay off eventually as well. Children to come maybe.
Relying on a bonus is not good and with your fianc! being poor at managing money, maybe future trouble. It's all on your shoulders.
You need to build up reserves and good that you are not wasting money on renting and good that you both have jobs.
As I said before money wasted is gone for good.
  • As I have already said, there's no 'ditching the expensive wedding' - it's booked and a lot already paid for... we can cut back on the things we've still got left to pay for, but will hardly make a difference at this point.

We never ever rely on the bonus, it isn't even considered in our spreadsheets, this is usually just put towards savings, holidays etc.

I guess 'wasted money' is a matter of opinion, I don't believe going on holiday is wasted money - it's making memories in our lives :)

Appreciate all the comments and advice, thank you!
  • Also would like to point out once again, we have never complained about the cost of our wedding, or for the need to reduce this cost. We have both chosen this budget for our wedding, and although I appreciate everyone's opinions/advice on this, we will not be compromising on this, and don't feel the need to either. We of course are searching around for things in relation to the wedding, getting best prices and doing bits ourselves, so if it comes in under budget that's great. But by all means we aren't forcing ourselves to spend as little as possible!
  • Kate I am 22 and on the housing ladder also although a much smaller mortgage. I will also be saving for a wedding in near future but to start with il be concentrating on getting emergency fund built up. Spent a small fortune this month as savings were doing a lot better than I thought, almost regretting it now so I can tell iv definitly got the savings bug and love knowing iv got that safety net. Il follow your diary with interest, good luck.
