Gammon joint?

Options
Hi I've got a big-ish unsmoked gammon joint in the fridge, its 1.454 kg, does anyone have any ways to use it up? Was going to do it as a joint, maybe the leftover for stew/casserole (if gammon would work in that?) but can I stretch it any further?

It's just me and my toddler to eat it. Thanks!
Up and onwards to the future!

That is huge for just the 2 of you...and you will be soon sick of sight of it.

Suggest you divide into 2 or 3 portions and freeze the remainder to use at your leisure.

    Hi

When I have a large gammon joint, we get at least 4 different meals from it for 2 adults and 2 children.

I'll do it as a joint for a roast with veg. The next day we would have gammon, rice and peas, with a sweet chilli sauce.

We would then have a night where we would have a pea and gammon and mint, soup, with hm bread, and a crumble for pudding.

Finally I would do a big jumbalya, with any veg I have to use up, and use the final bit of gammon in it too.

Would I cook it before dividing it? Or just cut bits off and use the rest as roast?

Macaroni cheese tastes fab if you add a bit of gammon to it. I've made a stovies type dish with gammon that was lovely. Use some in soup (pea and ham etc).

I'd cook it keep some slices and shred a lot of it to freezet in portion sizes for stuff like the above.

I'd probably divide in 2 when raw and freeze one portion as is.

I do the same when beef is on offer, as the joints tend to be sold in 2kg pieces which is far too much if cooked in one go.

The unsmoked gammon joint in my freezer is 1.304kg. I usually get the smallest one I can find, to fit into my largest saucepan.

I used to put some soaked dried peas in the cooking water to also make pea & ham soup, but have become a convert to Nigella's ham in (somewhat ironically at the moment) coke recipe.

We will have some for Sunday dinner, then the leftovers for as far into the week as possible. Cooked ham doesn't freeze very well, but it it very versatile. Ham, egg & chips. Chicken & ham pie. Ham & cauliflower cheese. Ham quiche. Ham omelette. Ham sandwiches.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Oh pick me! I've been lurking on MSE for some while :)

Brng to boil then simmer, in cider/ginger ale/anything popsie ... for 3-5 hours.
Slaver on some glaze... anything you like: marmalade/honey/jam/pickle ? Then put in hot oven for about 30-40 mins... and serve .... YUM !

This is an old Nigella recipe ... OH has been doing for years... we love it and hope you enjoy ! No matter what size the gammon... there's never anything left for sandwiches the next day :(ic
