In the nicest possible way...if you don't handle stress well, then working for a private accountancy firm may be leaping from the frying pan into the fire. And while more touchy-feely sectors may seem like a better bet, the jobs are at least equally demanding. It's just easier to handle if it's for something you believe in.
Have you considered using your skills to volunteer for the CAB and see what sort of doors that experience opens?import this0 -

The pension is obviously a factor, even though civil service pensions are not as generous as the media would have you believe. The terms and conditions are better than most but they too are being squeezed.
I am already registered with the civil service jobs website. Like I said I'm time barred from moving until November 2014.
Pensions are way more generous than anything you might find in a similar role in the private sector. It's a huge factor. You'll also get paid sick pay which is becoming increasingly rare outside public sector roles.
I'm with Marybelle. Exhaust every avenue within the civil service before you look elsewhere. November isn't that far off. I think after 25 years in HMRC you might find switching to a charity with little infrastructure, few processes, probably not great working conditions to be very challenging. If you are trying for a baby you are more likely to get family friendly conditions where you are than in private practice.0 -
Hi, At 46 you are a prime candidate for re-employment or Self employment! Years of experience to give advice that will reward you with a far better salary than that you are used to! My friend has just retired as a VAT inspector and hated every minute of his job! Life is what you make it!0

I have approached occupational health with no avail, spoken many times to my line manager who is very unsympathetic (for example when my partner miscarried halfway through her pregnancy in February 2013 my manager insisted I phone in every day and reminded me every time of the work that I was missing and at my back to work meeting told me that having children wasn't the be all and and end all, how he knew couples who didn't have children and they had great lives and other inappropriate comments).
What a horrible horrible man.0 -
How about looking into becoming a Finance Officer (or similar) for a school?0
