Question regarding washing (clothes)

I am having some issues with clothes getting that "damp" smell.
I am washing them at 40 degrees but don't want to wash them any hotter than that if I can help it. I don't have a TD so they then get put on the airer in my bedroom.
I am using liquitabs and comfort.
Can anyone advise how I can avoid getting the damp smell?
Thanks in advance.

it sounds like the smell might be coming more from the clothes drying indoors than the washing process. Do you keep a window open (even if just slightly) and have heat in the room you dry laundry in or a dehumidifier on? I use cheap and cheerful powder and most washes on 30 then line dry where I can and use a dehumidifier if not and get no smells.
If the cause isn't drying in an unventilated room then check the washing machine itself isn't smelly. Mine gets a very hot wash with vinegar regularly to clean/descale it and I leave the door and powder compartment door agar as much as possible to avoid mouldy smells.
hope you get it sorted

I get that horrid smell if the clothes take more than day or so to get dry so, for me, the answer is to get them near some heat from radiators as soon as possible and rotate the clothes about a bit to dry them as quickly as I can. It is difficult this time of year. Heated clothes dryers will help but they are not cheap which is why I use radiators which I realise is not ideal."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

i find that clothes dry quicker if you dont use any softener, i have started using white vinegar instead
I dont dry my clothes inside often but to stop them smelling you need to get them dry as quickly as possible0 -
Thank you all so much, I will give those things a try.
Im so grateful for all the great advice I get from this forum.

I dry everything indoors (fireguard in front of gas fire) and the only time I get 'that smell' is when I've left things in the washer too long before I take them out to dry.0
