piecework?

Is there such a thing nowadays? Or are they all scams?

When I was smaller (talking 20 years ago now) I can remember sitting down as a family in the evening and packing greetings cards and stuffing envelopes. Mum and Dad used to get a couple of pence per item, and it used to give us some spending money for our summer holidays/trips out.

I'm a busy Mum and don't really have time to start a full on business but I was looking at doing something from home that would bring in a few £s a week (literally, like £10 lol) to help us out a little as I don't work and that I could do around the children i.e. evenings.

Do these things exist anymore? I suppose the survey sites etc would work but I like to talk to my husband on an evening as he's out all day and feel completely anti-social sat on the computer all night every night.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hiya might be worth looking at swagbucks, its time consuming - but not distracting.

I.e you can 'watch' tv adverts for points to convert to cash but I used to sit their playing with kids and just clicking the button at the relevant moment...not sure if you'd quite do £40 without putting alot of effort in..but its quite easy to tot up that £5.

People don't know what they want until you show them.
  • I've been wondering the same thing myself. There has to be that kind of work still available somewhere!

When I was younger my family used to do a similar thing, except it was putting together things like greetings cards and pens. It was still a long time ago, but certainly more recently than your experience - perhaps 10 or 12 years ago? I believe the company was called History & Heraldry.

I've emailed them this morning to see if they still have home-based work opportunities. I'll let you know if they get back to me...!

I'd love to hear if anyone else knows of any possible avenues of this kind of work.
  • There are still some genuine companies out there for peicework, you just need to find them.

Up until last year my sister still packed greetings cards, she had health issues which stopped her going to work and she's never been one for benefits so she was determined to do something with her time. This was ideal because she was able to work from home and wasn't high energy/stress. She's now fighting fit and back at work.

It's not highly paid but if you get into a rythem with it you can churn out a job every few days for £40-60 sometimes more.

I remember years ago a friend use to make crackers from home for a company, don't think this exists now, I have never seen any jobs, probably all done by machine now.
  • If anyone does find out if it still exists I would love to know. Anything, even if it's pence. It's so difficult to find anything that isn't a scam but I completely agree with not wanting to sit at the computer all night.
  • There is a company near me called the glitter tree who offer peace work.
my daughter gave it a go in the summer but they never offered her any more work after her first lot.
They pack glitter and tattoos etc and pay 5p per item.

i think my daughter couldn't do enough for them and they now have some mums who do big chunks of their packing, sad really as my daughter was looking forward to doing a bit for them.

Do you have any greeting card manufacturers or packing houses in your area as they definitely still use homeworkers to pack cards? It might be worth a search on the Internet and getting in touch with any.

If you have a sewing machine, it might be worth looking for companies near you that want outworkers. I've seen a couple on my local Gumtree, although I didn't apply for various reasons. Obviously you'd have to use your common sense when checking them out.
