wedding cake advice

Options

Hi all new to these forums but hoping someone can give me some advice, I am making my sons wedding cake pretty scary really as I know its got to be just right, its a 4 tier cake bottom 2 fruit and top 2 sponge, the top tier is also a dome so really 5 tiers that looks like 4, I am ok with making the cake and am starting practicing the icing, which will be sugar paste/ ready to roll icing and some royal icing lines piped on. what I would like to know is can I put it together the night before the wedding and if so where do I ask the reception to store it, or should I put it together the morning of the wedding, the wedding is at 1130 and I think the meal is about 3-4 pm. also how long is it likely to take me to stack, its a stacked cake with dowels not pillars. grateful for any advice

I'd recommend getting in touch with the reception venue first and foremost. They'll be used to this kind of thing so can probably give you some advice and they might offer some helpful solutions for you. Good luck! I'm sure the cake will be amazing!
  • The main thing I would say about putting it together is do it at the venue - my cousin is a cake-maker and the first time she made one she stacked it all up, and then had to drive to the venue really slowly so it wouldn't fall over! It was OK thankfully but she said she'd never do it again and would always take the cake to the venue separately and stack it up there.

I would check with the venue first though to see what their storage options are and if you're able to do it the night before. They might also be able to provide some equipment - our caterers for example gives us a cake stand and knife as part of the deal - so that might reduce the amount of stuff you need to bring.

  • I agree with those that have said get it done the night before, and in situ, you know what it's like when you are trying to get something done to a tight deadline, things can and do go wrong, and you should be spending the morning getting ready and making yourself lovely for the wedding, not stressing and sweating!!
  • thanks all for you advice I intend putting it together at the reception as its in Cornwall so lots of windy roads and hills don't want to try and transport it in one piece, will speak to the venue and see what there storage options are.
