Hello I work part time earning under tax threshold ..I recently started working for a family friend a few hours a week I gave my national insurance number and bank details .I have received a letter today from hmrc stating I will have a br tax code from second employment ..even though I will still be under tax threshold I was not aware I would need to inform them as thought my second employer would ..obviously they have put me in the payroll but the letter I received today has a wrong national insurance number and I have noticed that hmrc have put my married name on the letter I use my msiden name for work and hmrc as I have never changed it I can only assume my employer assumed I used my married name ..why wouldn't she ?! ..I will phone employer tomorrow to let them know details are wrong although I did give her my nat ins number and my bank details all in my msiden name ..I will also phone hmrc tomorrow to correct details I am just worried about the nat ins number they have on record for me why would it be such a strange number it is 8 characters with no letter on the end it doesn't look like a normal nat ins number ? To make this all a bit more complicated I am in the process of changing to my married name but keeping maiden name as a middle name so by the time this is sorted u probably would have received my deed poll documents stating name change ..messy !! Shall I tell them I am in process of changing my name ? I assume they will want proof anyway and as yet I don't have it !

If it doesn't follow the format for NI numbers (eg AA 12 12 12
then it isn't an NI number. If it only has 8 digits then it isn't a UTR.
It's the number which should track you, whatever your name. So you need to get that sorted.
With a second job, you could get HMRC to split your personal allowance between the two employments and then you wouldn't pay tax as long as the combined sum is below the threshold.0
