Cost or service?

I understand both are important but allow me to elaborate; If you could chose only 1 of these then which one would you go for when looking around for a mortgage/loan of some kind? Reason being that it is a very confusing world out in the financial world. You have over 100 mortgage companies, 50 loan companies and so the list goes on. I can't imagine that all the mortgage companies in the U.K have the same rate! so what makes someone go to Lloyds and not the Metro? or Barclays and not Santander? I'm guessing it's service as can't think of why anyone would chose a more expensive mortgage (seems pretty easy to find relatively cheap or cheapER mortgages through comparison sites so I remain baffled).

There are various reasons:
Some lenders lend more than others (As in affordability is more lenient)
Some have more lenient underwriting criteria
Some offer better service
Some people just apply to whoever they bank with
Some people do not research and stick to who they know
Not everyone wants the same thing, some people want to fix in for 2 years others for 10 years. Some do not want to pay fees, others will do if it means theyre getting a lower rate. There is no 1 set lender/deal for everyone.
