There was a tumble drier in this house when we moved here, I would never have bought one, and I do use it very occasionally, but never to dry from scratch. In winter I dry stuff on radiators (some people consider this Very Wrong, but I don't know why) Sometimes if I have a pile of cardboard clothes, I just put them all in the drier for 15 minutes. Like many others who have replied, I use tiny amounts of detergent and rarely use a fabric conditioner.

I've been reading up on ways to keep nappies from going hard ... same theory as clothes, I guess!

One of the options is to tumble dry for 10 minutes and then finish drying naturally. Might be a compromise? Don't know if you were planning on keeping the dryer? If you do try this then its probably worth me mentioning that most people say to dry 10 minutes then finish off drying naturally, while a few people swear on drying naturally and finishing off the last 10 minutes in the dryer ... although they admit the timing is a bit tricky!!

I have had to dry all my washing indoors for 2 years now.I refuse to use my tumble part of the washer/drier and only use airers. The secret is to try and keep an eye on the weather forcast and to try and wash everything ready to dry in 1 sunny day in a sunny room

ecover liquid plus washing soda means everything is soft. It is also soft with a standard washing powder plus the 9 balls sold in lakeland limited. Really though ecover plus balls is best and gives me excellent results and my towels are always soft

it is easy to stop using it i'm in a flat too and used to use mine 3 or 4 times a day, but i got given an airer which i've started using indoors and it doesn't leave anything crispy, plus i've got an over the bath airer thing which is good for towels and jeans etc.

once you start stopping using it (iyswim) it becomes a challenge not to use it!

    Evening folks,

Just thought i would give you an update and let you know what i decided to do.

I started shopping around for an airer and in B&Q (i work there so get discount too) they had an old fashioned pulley thing (like Penelope Penquin has) but made of metal stuff for £30.

So i bought it and have managed to put it up tonight, without falling out with OH while doing this which is a major achievement although, granted, it was very eay to put up,. I have positioned it directly infront of the window which has two windows and the theory is that i can lower it to get the sun and wind through the window.

First load of washing is on it and im waiting in great anticipation to see how it dries!!

    How sad am i????????????????????????????

Thanks for everyones' help and advice.

    Definitely not sad!

I am so glad you started this thread Sugarhunny as I use my tumbler all the time. I have always felt so guilty about it but kind of put my head in the sand - anything to get washing out of sight and out of mind!

It has been pouring with rain here for the last couple of days but I got my airer out of the garage and decided I was going to use it. I haven't stopped using my tumbler completely as DD has wet the bed on 3 consecutive nights and there is no where to dry that much washing when the line isn't an option.

BUT I think I have saved two loads of tumble drying in the meantime, so small steps...eh?!

Thanks Sugarhunny and I hope you enjoy watching your washing dry!!!

I probably sound stupid here but why stop using the drier if you have one? Is it the expense? Is it really expensive?

    Evening Mae & Nova 5,

Thanks for the encouraging words Nova5!

Mae, Yea its the expense, I have 3 children and 2 adults washing to do and i found it was never off. My electric bill came in 2 weeks ago and i am paying £155 a quarter. This is horridly expensive and even the electric company said i was classed as a 'high user'. I cant and wont continue to have a bill this big again. I could spend my money in better ways.

I think you got us mixed up Sugar!

For me I think the guilt thing is down to the expense and trying to my bit for the environment too.

Out of interest, does anyone know how much it costs to run a tumble drier - say each load?
