Voluntary Work

So I was on my way home from the cinema on New Year's Eve and as I was walking through town I noticed they've turned the old Blockbuster into a big charity shop. There was also writing in the window saying volunteers urgently required. As I have been seeking a work placement to complete an Level 2 NVQ in Retail Skills, I thought maybe I'll telephone them after the new year and see if they'll have me? Will have to buy some new clothes for my wardrobe mind, which isn't easy when you're size XXXL, but hey one step at a time right

Well done and good luck with your application! Voluntary work is an excellent start and really boosts self esteem. Any employer would look favourably upon this and who knows where it could lead in the future.
Not sure why you would have to buy new clothes as long as you look presentable.Be not so busy making a living that you forget to make a life0 -
Go for it. I used to volunteer with Oxfam when I was at university. Volunteering for a local museum was how I finally broke into English Heritage (two years of applications, and I can't remember how many interviews!)0

Volunteering is great - as well as using current skills and learning new ones, it gives you an up-to-date reference, improves self esteem, gives an opportunity to find out about other job vacancies which might not be advertised, and shows commitment. That's in addition to helping those who need it!
Volunteering can also help with future job applications, as you can use examples of how you have dealt with awkward customers, or implemented a new system that has saved money/saved time/recruited more volunteers/etc. - all useful on application forms and during interviews.
Good luck x0 -
I have got an interview on Monday0

That's great. I'm currently thinking about voluntary work as I'm still studying part time for a degree but my youngest child has started school now. I gave up work in 2010 to look after the children full time and have Ben studying since then so need to get some recent work experience.
I hope it works out for you OP.Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
