You tried using Corsodyl Mint mouthwash (not the daily stuff) that seems to numb my mouth, but also leaving me with a nasty taste in my mouth. Better than pain though! I took this before I saw the dentist about my teeth a couple years back.0

It will incubate the bugs and increase their multiplication making a bad situation worse. (Think youghurt making!)
NEVER hold anything warm against an aching tooth.brook2jack wrote: »You should never hold anything warm against your face when you have a mouth infection. It encourages the infection to track up to the skin of your face and in extreme circumstances you will be left with a discharging infection on your face which may need surgical treatment.
Leave the old wives remedies alone , they often make things much worse, from teeth having to be extracted because clove oil has burnt right through the gum down to bone, to discharging sinuses where heat has been applied to the face.
Thanks for the advice on heat. I'll lay off it. It's a shame as that actually did make it feel a lot better. Interesting, a lot of sites including the NHS site advise a hot compress on a site of inflammation where there might be an abscess, but presumably they are not talking about tooth abscesses, only skin abscesses.
Any advice of what I can do to help between now and when I get to a dentist?
I phoned my dentist at 9:03 to find all the emergency appointments had gone between 9:00 and 9:02! Apparently there has been a massive rush for appointments after Christmas and the New Year, and the surgery is only now getting on top of it by cutting back on the number of emergency appointments available and turning the slots into regular appointments instead
Never mind. I'm on the waiting list for a ringback if anyone doesn't show today and the surgery is only 10 minutes away. Failing that I've been told to ring first thing Monday and I'll get an appointment, as the rush will have been sorted and everything will be back to normal. I was given an out of hours number for this weekend in case I need it, so I'll play it by ear and see how I feel.0 -

Thanks Sharon. I went and got some tonight as the surgery didn't ring today, both the mouthwash and the pump spray. Annoyingly, when I took the cap off the spray the pump nozzle was missing, so I'll have to take it back tomorrow and get another one.0 -
I've had sinusitis on and off since 23rd November, one bad bout first and then a couple of minor flares. The last minor flare seemed to clear the day before this toothache started.
I only ask as i'm feeling all sinusy again today and wondered if there was a connection.0 -
Well, I woke up this morning to find the pain in my teeth/gums almost gone. I haven't needed any painkillers this afternoon. As far as I could see over the weekend the whole gum/skin flap around the tooth was raw and bleeding. This morning it's starting to look like little parts of it are 'dying' off (look quite grey and shriveled) but the majority (95%) of the area looks generally more healed and is now pink, rather than red, bleeding and angry looking.
I'm wondering whether my wisdom tooth has just erupted up through my gums a bit more forcefully than it's ever done before, and that's the reason for the pain?
Anyway, I've booked a normal appt for Thursday rather than emergency appt for today, as I want a little more time to talk to the dentist. If the x-rays show nothing amiss that could account for the pain I've had since before the new year and removal isn't an option, I might ask her to do something with the flaps of skin over the teeth to help me keep them clean. I understand you can have them removed to a certain extent, and that would be very helpful as both of them have irritating little flappy bits that get in the way of the toothbrush.0 -
Just a little update as a conclusion to the story.
The dentist i went to see x-rayed the area and told me he was referring me to a oral surgeon as it was decayed and time for it to come out, but given its position he wasn't happy doing it himself.
I had an appointment within two weeks, a further full head x-ray and the surgeon agreed it had to come out now. The surgeon said whoever had told me that if the closest nerve to the root was damaged my lip would droop did not know their anatomy. The nerve that was closest, if damaged, could cause numbness, not drooping.
I returned today to have it out at 3pm (this appointment was a rescheduled one as I couldn't make the original booking two weeks ago), was prepared by the surgeon for there to be a fight getting it out and he may decide if it goes on too long to cut it off and leave the root in.
After 30 seconds tugging out it came and he said "Oh!" in surprise. From the time I went in to the time I was out the door and on the pavement afterwards was 17 minutes.
So I'm sitting her looking like a hamster and eying my other half enviously as he sups a cup of tea.
In all it has taken about 35 days from visiting my local dentist to extraction, but had I kept the appointment on 29th January it would have taken just 20 days. I think that's pretty fantastic for an NHS procedure.
The whole sinusitis thing is ongoing, and I appear to have a chronic case of it that flares occasionally.0 -

That's a good result.
I was interested in the advice from brook2jack and Toothsmith that you should never warm your face if you have a mouth infection. That does make sense (although I had not realised that!)0 -
For Wisdom teeth Extraction, you should have to be referred by some other Dentist. last year my Elder Brothers two wisdom teeth had been removed at City Hospital. But for extraction he took reference of some other Dentist of the City Hospital0
