for me , online will always be a lot more expensive because I buy most of my bread/meat/fish etc on "yellow label" at 75% and more off , which you are never going to get through an online shop.

I really wish supermarkets near me did decent reductions on meat, most it ever get is 50% off and that's rare:( you're very lucky to get such good reductions.

I'm going back to shopping online, I've been doing little shops every few days as I've been really busy lately, but my New Years resolution is to budget better and be more organised. I find online shopping helps massively with this.

I have shopped online since they started. I am quite sure it is much cheaper.

I really hate going into supermarkets now. I find it so easy to control my spending as I know how much I want to spend and I "juggle" purchases around and try to substitute cheaper items.

I shop with Ocado and the very best thing about the Ocado site is the reviews by other customers, it gives me the confidence to purchase items I might be unsure about.

I cannot imagine struggling round the supermarket, putting things into the trolley, onto to the conveyer belt, into a bag, back into a trolley, into the back of a car, and then struggle to carry them into the house.

Compare that to a click of a button and then a ring at the doorbell. Why does anyone go to the shops?!

ASDA did a Mumdex survey about online shopping and online behaviour generally and it seems people do think they save money shopping online.

If you go to https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk, you can order online from Aldi there :) I've not tried it yet because there's a store only round the corner from me, but it's an option!

I got all excited then as I love aldi but struggle to get there. Just checked mysupermarket and aldi only has 3 products listed that I could see :(
  • Oh, I hope Aldi goes 'online' soon! Using Asda, cheapest atm.
  • I think it depends on what you want or need from your shopping habits.

If you're able to visit a local supermarket every couple of days to check for yellow stickers and be flexible in your cooking, then shopping online probably won't save you any money.

If you currently do a weekly shop, shopping online can have some benefits, most of which others have already noted - not being distracted by things you're not there for, being less likely to miss offers, easy meal planning around offers, you can plan a shop and then come back to it later / the next day, others can add things they've used up, need for home ec, or just fancy via the mobile app, etc.

Personally I hate supermarkets - people who block aisles with their trolleys, knock their baskets into you, children running around screaming, being out of stock of the one thing you couldn't substitute, lugging everything back to the car and then discovering some inconsiderate so-and-so has parked so close that you can't open the driver's door... ARGH. So, I'm a big fan of Ocado - 1-hour delivery slots, very polite drivers, having it appear as if by magic in my kitchen, getting a text and e-mail before the delivery to warn me of any subs or missing items, and as I'm within the M25 I can get same-day delivery. Fantastic.

I don't "offset" the delivery cost as we have an annual pass - unlimited deliveries for free (min. £40 spend, no more than 1 delivery per day) and priority booking for 1 Christmas slot (1 further Christmas slot is available but you pay for that one). The pass now also gives a little money off certain branded items.

Their offers are pretty good - they have a 3-for-£10 continuous offer on meat and fish that usually contains a small-sized whole chicken, so £10 for 6+ meals worth of meat is pretty good value. They also have other offers on most of the time, price-match to Tesco, and the essential Waitrose brand is both good quality and value, as is Ocado's own brand.

I find that I can easily shop for 2 adults, lunches and dinners, for a week on £50, including drinks and top-ups for household items (dishwasher tabs, bin bags, etc). I occasionally have to pop to the local Tesco to top up (usually if DH motors through his Dr Pepper or fancies some fresh bread) and even if you go in for a 99p baguette you inevitably come out having spent £10+ on unplanned purchases. But, that's us - if you're more controlled, you may not have that issue :)
