Advice wanted re recruitment/ job agencies

One of my children is unemployed and as far as I can see the Job centre basically process them as numbers and there seems to be no help of any use regarding work searching.
They apply for work online but I am wondering if it is not better to actually register in person with the agency as the recruitment consultant can actually get to know you and is paid if they get you into work .
I have tried mentioning this at home but had my head bitten off so before I attempt round 2 I would appreciate some advice or experiences from on here .

Yes, register individually with agencies direct. This may involve submitting a CV first, or completing their application form, but, if they are handling suitable vacancies they will almost certainly want to meet the candidate in person before sending them for an interview or for a temporary assignment. That interview should be treated as one would when meeting an employer - not treating it as meeting your mates but dressing to suitably impress depending on the level of position being sought.

I wonder how long they have been unemployed. Had they not already registered with a good number of agencies? Were they not already following up with those agencies every week?

Unemployed best part of two years with a couple of temporary stints breaking that up.
As far as I am aware not registered as such with an agency and attempts by myself to suggest this have resulted in my head being bitten off as I apparently ' know nothing'
I'll admit I don't know how it works these days as I have had my current job for almost 20 years now so that was another world then!
They aren't a lazy person , just a very quiet and reserved personality and I don't think that helps with the way things are now jobs wise . I just want to see if it is worth being a bit more forthright in 'suggesting' that face to face at an agency might pay off more than internet applications only.
  • no harm in walking into agencies, at least then they will have a face to go with name, when you call again..

looks good on JSA jobsearch, too..

The more professional agencies will request that you go in. From my experiance only the nasty, waste of space ones allow online applications.

Where are you located? What area of expertise are they looking for? I could perhaps recommend a couple of reliable ones?

I would say it depends on what type of work they are doing.

I do Finance type work, anything and everything in that field. I uploaded my cv to Reed's website and made it visible to all. I found that other Agencies contacted me when they had something suitable. If they thought they could get me an interview they would arrange to meet me first to make sure I didn't have two heads or some nasty habits.

So far this has kept me gainfully employed for three years over two contracts. I am still waiting for a permanent job but long term contracts have been great so far :)

I am sure if you ring for an appointment, the consultant that deals with that particular discipline will be happy to do a registration interview. Most consultants put time aside each day in order to register candidates.

If a position comes up that your child is suitable for, they would be the quickest applicant to put forward as hopefully they will have already been reference checked!

Ringing up once a week is good too, I would suggest Thursday afternoon or first thing Friday morning for temporary work, that is when we start to get positions and number requirements through for the next week. Also, by virtue of the number of applicants we usually have on our books, we tend to remember the people we have spoken with most recently!!
