The reason why people recommend travel insurance for european or international travel is in case you need medical attention.

National travel shouldnt incur that, but you're still at risk of loss of items you're taking with you.

  • Hi

Most travel insurance covers the client for a number of things, medical care, lost baggage, delayed departure, trip cancellation and curtailment etc.

As far as medical care goes you don't need travel insurance when you go to England.

However say you or someone traveling with you gets sick and you have to cancel your trip. The chances are that your tickets and maybe some of your accommodation or car hire costs are non refundable. Travel insurance might cover you for that. Or say you check your bag in at the airport and it never arrives at the destination. Well the airline might give you some money towards the cost of replacing the bag and content but it won't be much. Travel insurance might pay out a bit more.

I guess most people travelling within the Uk don't take any form of travel insurance, but its maybe not a bad idea.

Just make sure you read the small print of any travel insurance before agreeing to it. You just need to be 100% sure what you are covered for.

It could be argued that you need travel insurance for every journey. I normally wouldn't bother if it's a domestic flight or train journey. It's up to the individual though.

There was a time when I did a lot of travelling so I had a blanket policy with RAC which covered me for all journeys, domestic and overseas. If you do a lot yourself you might want to have a look at something like that. :)

Check your home contents insurance. You may well be covered for personal possessions away from the home.
  • I get a yearly travel insurance for European travel - I take a couple of trips at least a year, and it works out a fair bit cheaper than paying the airline rates for a single trip. And then I'm covered for any trips to UK etc as well
