Going on hol while on ESA and employed ?

Hello all , I have been signed off work for over 18 months due to an injury I had and still recovering from I am mobile but can't perform tasks that are in my role or any other things within company so I can't work at this time but receiving hospital rehabilitation to build up returning to work . Due to length of time off I no longer get SSP but ESA which I just had assessment for and passed .
Now the thing is I have a holiday booked for this year as it's been booked for years . Do I have to let the ESA people know I am traveling ? Will I have to let my company know also ?
Thanks in advance

  • I can't answer the part about ESA, but if you are still employed, albeit not receiving wages, you must still conform to all contractual requirements and that includes booking holidays in the usual way. As an aside, you are aware that you are still entitled to holiday pay too?
  • my last job you could not book or take holidays whilst sick, you would get the holidays back when you returned to work.

I can't see no reason why you can not go on holiday tho, just remember to claim your holidays back when you return to work, as you are entitled to have holidays when you are well not sick.
  • People have been sacked for going on holidays while sick but not informing their employer.

Make sure you inform your employer and get their agreement.

They should not refuse unless they have reasonable grounds to do so

You could ask for the holiday to be paid but this may effect benefits.

Holiday accrue and carry over while on sick if not taken.

have you checked that your illness/injury is covered by your travel insurance, in case you need to claim for healthcare while on holiday ?

They accrue and carry over so you have not lost any left from the previous holiday years(s)
