Yes, plus VAT + probably a "collection fee" for whoever you pay the duty & VAT too
It may seem cheaper to buy from US but DYOR and you will often find it is not once these items are taken into account, plus you are not covered by UK consumer legislation, so if it does not work after a fortnight you are on your ownNumerus non sum0 -
Go into a camera shop and have a go with both cameras. The D80 and 400D feel radically different, personally i FAR prefer the D80, metal body, feels far more like a proper camera. Plus the 18-135 lens is about a million times better than the rubbish 'jam jar' kit lens you get with the 400d.
Don't buy from the US though - you WILL get taxed on such an item, probably more than the actual difference you've saved... plus no warranty as SLRs generally have country/continent-specific warranties.0 -
Hold on a minute. We are not comparing like for like here. The EOS 400D is Canon's entry level DSLR. The D40/D40x is Nikon's entry level DSLR. The D80 is the camera just above the D40x in Nikons current range.
The EOS 400D is maginally a better camera than the D40x. The D80 is better than both of them but it costs a fair bit more.
The Canon 400D 18-55mm "kit lens" doesn't have the build quality of their more expensive lenses but its not as bad optically as some people make out and its fine as a first lens and gives the owner time to get used to the camera and work out what lens he/she really needs.0 -
If you are travelling then have a look in Dixons - they had the D80 and 18-135 lens package for £5930

hi all,
thanks for the reply. i am basically upgrading myself to SLR's. the reason why i thought of D80 is cause that's the most up to date and best reviewed. if anyone needs help on cameras chk www.dpreview.com. it's a very helpful site.
also can we buy from duty free and get it delivered to UK address or buy at the duty free and collect on return

Don't get seduced by the extra mega pixels on the D80. From what you seem to be going to use the camera for you will be buying something you won't need - unless you intend doing poster size prints.
I've just bought a D40, it is absolutely brilliant ! Suggest you do a trawl of the net for reviews on this camera and also there are lots of comments there about paying for mega-pixels you don't need !
There is also a cash back offer available from Nikon at the moment:
http://www.europe-nikon.com/home/en_GB/local_content/broad/328/1.html
This makes the D40 unbelievable value for money - you can buy a Nikkor telephoto lens with the money you save by not getting the D80 !
Finally, have a look at the John Lewis website, they are offering a 3 yr extended warranty (something I normally wouldn't touch with a bargepole !) and accidental damage cover for £45 - worth considering.0 -
thanks for the valuable advise....u r right i'll never use the D80 beyond a limit. need to think a bit more seriously as D80 involves lot of money.
