Stained white tiles in kitchen

I have some cheap white wall tiles in the kitchen and the area above the vent in the cooker is stained - not just the grout but the actual surface of the tile itself.
I know how to clean the grout, but there must be a way to get the staining off the slightly glossy surface of the tiles themselves. I have tried hot water and washing liquid, Elbow Grease but really don't want to resort to trying bleach - hate the stuff.
Is there some bicarb/vinegar recipe or something of the kind someone knows of that will clean this area please?

There's a couple of good things that I know do work, I don't know any old fashioned store cupboard ones though.
Flash for floors is brilliant, I use it all over my cooker hood/tiles etc and used neat it just takes it all straight off.
If it's really bad grime then mix on a saucer about a tablespoon of bleach and a tablespoon of cream cleaner like Cif. Make sure you have rubber gloves on and open the windows because it stinks but it's brilliant.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I don't know any really cheap things to try. But theres a cleaner I often use for very difficult to shift stains which I always keep a stock of. It's called Bar Keeper's Friend & is great for so many jobs around the home. Costs about £2.50-£3 & worth every penny. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

I have a hand spray filled with white vinegar. Normally I ise it for cleaning glass and mirrors but it can be used on most surfaces but check just in case. I used it to get rid of grease stains on the ceiling. It is cheap and pretty effective. Then try a paste of bicarbonate of soda and scrub with that. If you get the bicarb in bulk it is very cheap. If you use the small cooking pots it gets more expensive. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
