I started an FAQ back in March 2013 but life got in the way and I never finished it. I think one was also mentioned more recently and people seemed to like the idea.

SO ...

I'm hunting around CCC for topics that are brought up regularly e.g How to retweet, ITV comp questions, FB liking/sharing/commenting/tagging etc ...
Hoping to get something together in January :)

If anyone can think of questions that are regularly asked in CCC, please feel free to add them or any other ideas for a FAQ thread.

I think the actual thread would be best set out like the advent thread = one post for each topic. Then it's easier to just link a post to a thread, rather than the whole FAQ thread itself.
Does that make sense?

Also, there's been suggestions of compiling a list of comp promoters who exclude people from NI. So I will try and tag that on too ... if a suitably comprehensive list can be compiled. I don't mean one-off comps, but large businesses like Morrisons, Waitrose etc

I think it is a lovely idea.

Do you mean that you will link the faqs to threads on the subject? So, if for example the question was "Is there a way to unfollow in bulk on twitter?", the answer would be "see the threads here, here and here"? Or have I misunderstood?
  • I originally meant that each question would have its own post. So if someone asked 'how do I tag someone on Facebook', there would be a single post answering that question that an MSE-er could link to, rather than linking to the whole FAQ thread and saying 'see point #17'.

However, I think I might end up with too many posts so it would be easier to have separate posts for each topic, like 'Facebook', Twitter', 'ITV' etc with multiple answers to questions within them, so then they could be amended/added to.

When I last looked at doing this I found I would be duplicating stuff that was already in the Comping Guide ... I don't know what to do about that ...

I don't think it will matter too much if there is some overlap with the comping guide. The comping guide will still be a useful starting point for new compers. There are often frequently asked questions that will not be covered in the comping guide.

Firstly, fab idea, our lass. I think a FAQ thread would be a real asset. I know we have Velvet Glove's excellent guide, yet so many questions crop up time and time again.

My instinct is to take some time with this thread to gather input from everyone wanting to contribute, but then to compile one FAQ thread. I would lay it out similarly to VG's guide. List the questions at the start, each one linking to where the answer is, further down the thread, and possibly to other places, like VG's guide sometimes. For example, "How do I use the Puzzler/Take a Break thread?"

Another thought is, would we want to include questions that crop up often, where there is no definitive answer, but plenty of discussion? For example, the very common, "how many comps should I enter?"

In my humbles, it's probably best to avoid including any controversial questions.

Off the top of my head one that crops up a lot is, "Why can't I list my own, or my friend's competitions here?"

I will give some more thought to this, but one that immediately springs to mind is:-

Can I search to exclude competitions that I have ticked or crossed?

I don't think there is any harm in including some controversial questions, such as "If I post competition that finishes at 6am on 15th, should I show the title as E: 15/01 or E: 16/01?" so long as the answer explains that there are two viewpoints on this.
