Will refuse collectors pick up my excess recycling?

Sorry, not sure if this one belongs here but would anyone know if the councils recycling collections team are obligated to collect excess amounts of bottles and cans if there are not in the provided allocated bins due to the amount?(Festive period etc)

Would like to get them collected in one hit so wondering if I should put them in large sack or bag but wont bother if they wont collect and I'll just take them down to the recyling centre myself.

Or does it depend on which council?

Thanks as usual

Hi it probably depends on the council, mine won't take extra not in green boxes. Before, when I've put it out in a black bag balanced on top of the green box, and even when I stuck on a "recycling" lable so it was clear it wasn't domestic waste, they refused to take it as they are not allowed to go through bags.
Not having a go at binmen or moaning, mine are generally great and its the council who make the rules, not them!

  • Having had discussions with neighbours before, what we do if we run out of room in any of our bins is utilise the empty space in theirs.
They would also do the same if they had extra recycling/waste.

I think it depends on where you are - ours provide the recycling containers for convenience but are pretty flexible about what you put it out in - if you have too much they'd rather you put it in a carrier bag alongside than put it in the general non recycling waste.

Ours have done (we have big blue wheelie bins) when some items like card were clearly too big or the wrong shape to go in the bin. I would suggest putting the bottles / cans in a cardboard box that can clearly be recycled as well, if it's in a bin liner they may be less likely to take them.

If they don't, many supermarkets now have recycling points if you aren't near a civic amenity site to take them to.

This is what we do.... I often find my bin has been put out for me then filled with other peoples recycling.

They also put it away after it has been emptied... nice neighbors. :T

My council would take bags next to the bin, but will no more.

It's often council specific, I find.

My council (Fife) used to uplift additional bags for a small fee.
They've now gone to a 'bookings only' service - for 25 quid an uplift.

Round here if it's not in the bin it doesn't get taken

For the current season we are allowed 2 extra clear sacks of recycling and two extra sacks of landfill in the appropriate week
