Has he given his P45 from old job to new employer?
On the P45 was there an X after the tax code at item 6?
942L is not quite the basic tax code; any idea why that is?

If all goes correctly and the P45 has a correct cumulative tax code then tax free allowance for 942L would increase by about £181 each week so any week earnings are over that tax would be paid and any week earnings are below that then a tax rebate would be paid.
  • No cross. No idea why tax code is odd, we get tax credits? He had his security license paid in advance by company and it was then deducted back through wages? I really can't think of anything else.

Would he be able to get a rebate for the money he's already paid?

No X means that the tax code is cumulative so if all goes as it should having changed jobs should make no difference to the tax deductions. The purpose of the P45 is to advise the new employer of the tax code and basis along with the taxable earnings and tax paid so far, so that they can continue with them and deduct tax or refund tax based on your total earnings since the tax year started.

Off course it does not always go as it should, the P45 may not get to the payroll dept. in time for the first wage or two but if the wrong tax is deducted it will be corrected when the P45 is eventually applied.

Regarding the slight difference to the tax code, a couple of places will not make a lot of difference to the tax paid, but it is possible that the difference is caused by two changes one up and one down. Might be worth checking with the tax office.
