Apologies - didn't mean to hijack the thread or anything.
  • Has gone a bit off topic, but thanks for all the info, good to see people willing to contribute. Any more specifically relevant info, possibly from a Channel Islander who has attempted to get a refund would be great

Sky bills to Channel Island residents do not include a VAT charge so there is nothing to refund.
  • They did originally pay VAT incorrectly though, but a local newspaper started a campaign. See link:

    No.
As that article states they paid "VAT equivalent prices" no VAT was charged.
After the newspaper campaign Sky conceded by offering, as a goodwill gesture, the 16.67 VAT equivalent discount.
  • Why aren't we entitled to VAT refunds on previous monthly payments? What is the difference between this and PPI for example or any other overpayments or evercharging??.....

    Who is "we"

If you are a resident of IoM VAT has been correctly charged.
If you are a resident of the Channel Islands you were not charged VAT.

There is no VAT to refund.
  • I am in the Isle of Man and I can confirm that if an Isle of Man resident contacts Sky and state they understand IOM residents are being offered a discount then they will receive one equivalent to the VAT payment. Two people in my office have just done this and Sky offered the discount straight away, although they stated the discount would not be applied to IOM residents across the board, just those who asked for it.

Apparently, this 'offer' has been withdrawn. Sky state they were acting on misinformation regarding Isle of Man VAT exemption eligibility.
