    I've been Money Tipped!
They should just put a flat rate tax of £50 per pedal; they only have one use and we know they'll be put to a bad use.

Plus maybe some would only buy one pedal at a time and try to cycle with one foot? ;-)

^^ I can imagine car drivers would love that! Most would probably only need to buy the accelerator pedal without needing to alter their driving style!

Seeing how cycling is better for the environment and for health and congestion... maybe there should be a special tax on cars to encourage people to leave them at home.

Like a nationwide London Congestion Charge -- £5 a day for using any trunk roads... with that £5 being put directly into funds to pedestrianise town centres and provide safe pedestrian/cycling routes.

Single leg pedalling, a good training technique
I'll be doing some of that myself this weekend :)
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

In my area, like many urban streets, on-street parking is normal. Having a car isn't essential to me, it is a convenience rather than a necessity. I drive about as many miles as I cycle each year, and whilst I have a garage the design of the house makes it impractical to use on anything beyond an occasional basis for a car.

There isn't any parking charge, and whilst there isn't a lot of space in the road, the parking situation is comfortable despite being in London. That means for almost the entire year, the space outside my house is effectively my own personal car park and hence that part of the road is unusable by other vehicles (that isn't to say I'm precious about it, and am quite happy to park elsewhere if it happens to be occupied, but it very rarely is).

Using the cost per square foot to rent and purchase domestic property in the area, that space is worth about £1,200 p/a, or a capital sum of £26,000 to me. That is going to be inflated due to using housing values, but I nonetheless get a decent benefit from it for which I don't pay much (and nothing directly).

Nice little subsidy many car owners receive that bikes don't get :) I think it is worth a lot more than the 'road tax' I pay.
