Cheap Vinegar - Where to buy?

Options
I have been told that vinegar works just as well as roundup as a weedkiller, but is much cheaper. Research on the web suggests it's worth trying!

Now, where's the best place to buy vinegar in quantity? Best I can fins is just under £2 a litre for 5l which is about the same as buying it in small bottles from the supermarket.

Anyone seen vinegar substantially cheaper?

    Ethnic supermarkets.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)
  • I have tried this myself and vinegar alone wasn't all that effective. It kills the leaves but not much else.

I found that salt was the best thing to kill weeds and it stops them growing until it is cleared from the soil. That is if you don't have any other plants which would be affected.

There are formulations of vinegar, salt and washing up liquid which you spray on and put in the soil. However for me, salt alone worked best of all.

The last vinegar I purchased was from shortersclub but they are no longer selling.
  • Tesco value vinegar is 99p for 2 litres.
  • Chinese supermarket - the Manchester Wing Yip does both brown & white vinegar and also washing up liquid...

Except it doesn't work as well as glyphosate.

Ive tried vinegar (it works better if its warm). It works on smaller weeds with shallow roots. I find bleach much better.

On woody roots and roots from bushes its a lot harder to kill. You need to pour cooking oil over it. It wont do much for the wildlife but I'd imagine its better than bleach.

Salt, well ive poured bags and bags of salt over one particular shrub that was well established but cut down to the ground. I thought it had killed it completely but a couple of years later I found an offshoot a few feet away. That got drenched in cooking oil this summer.

Hubby is going to be gutted when he discovered the honeysuckle running wild will have disappeared by next spring but it was a matter of it being planted in the wrong place and was left to roam where it wanted.

At the moment I use value bottles of vinegar from Tesco as cleaning fluid. Clear vinegar for glass and mirrors and cheap old malt vinegar for descaling toilets.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
