I saw something like that at the IDH last year. Our hall way is exactly that shape so it would work. We use that space already. Where that door is in the photo is the start of our understairs cupboard, it goes deep about 8 foot then turns 180 degrees and goes round and underneath the stairs. So we can use the space as its full height till you get to the stairs, but hard to keep things sorted.
