I could also horrify you and admit that the btl is actually a sideline with returns that are only decent due to the current interest rate environment and that the opportunity for capital appreciation is a partial driver to my purchase but I fear you have a slight negative reaction to non-professional landlords and those holding multiple properties to benefit from HPI that results from constrained supply so I won't.

I hear there's been an incident in Devon due to a man spontaneously combusting.

    Quite true.

I have heard that a large forensics team are now concentrating on determining which specific part of the body caught fire first.....

AFAIK neither child benefit nor working families tax credits took capital in to account during tax year 11/12 when I was on a reduced income because of being on a 2 day week as a result of the economic situaton at the time in my industry and these were the only two 'benefits' I received.

Though you declined more work as benefits didn't make it worthwhile. I can remember the argument we had about it. Was a morality argument, whereby, fair play, it was there to be taken....however...

I just didnt see you as someone with excess capital considering your more left of centre posts and talk of benefits not making it worth working more. Let alone tapping into the BTL market.

I was looking at the possibility of reducing my hours and salary sacrifice to the point where I qualified for maximum tax credits but decided not to although I am currently salary sacrificing because of the child benefit situation. When I was on the reduced hours I did take on part time work such as doing the census collection as it was socially useful and gave me an insight into datasets that I use as part of my normal job even though after benefits withdrawal it paid less than £2 per hour.

BTL - I have no problem with it, not every one wants to buy. The problem is all about nimbys and housing supply not being able to increase to meet demand.

Anything else you would like to know?
    I think....

Yes actually. What colour pants are you wearing?

It has been reported that your posts are "more left of centre". I would be grateful if you would desist from this nasty habit, and bring your posts far more to the right wing. Or at the very least 'centre'......

Getting back to the question.......I used to think IFAs were a bunch of leeches but now I accept they have a role to play in managing your financial affairs.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

I'd prefer centre. I subscribe to both The Guardian and The Telegraph to ensure that my viewpoint is balanced.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

... so you probably dribble out of both sides of your mouth at once!

    Well done!

PS: I'm even more balanced. I read neither.

Bunch of nosey parkers asking questions that they've got no right to ask IMO. I haven't taken part in the census for close on 30 years, simply tell them where they can stick their impertinent questions, and have had zero come back.

Anyone who so much as opens the envelope is wasting time on an activity that benefits neither themselves nor society one jot, so just stick the whole lot in the bin as I do.

What colour is your skin? What religion are you? How many toilets do you have? Sorry, utter nonsense, just fix the sodding potholes and leave us alone!

I don't care for the census but like to think that I hide it well. :D
