Someone has been recruited with my job title

Hi All,

I’m in a bit of a weird situation. About 3 months ago, I was told that there would be a restructure in my team. My role and my responsibilities would change and the business would recruit a new manager whom I would report into. This new role as I understand offers a higher grade than me which means more money and better benefits.

It’s worth noting that I wasn’t offered the role but rather persuaded not to apply since I didn’t have the relevant experience. I was told I would have a new job title as a result of the restructure and a had a brief overview of what my responsibilities were. I agreed verbally since I wasn’t taking a pay cut or taking on extra work. The new managers role was advertised internally.

I found out a few weeks ago at the same time as the rest of my department and without my knowledge, that the business had recruited someone but they have been recruited and given the job title I have now, not the one advertised or the one that I was informed they were recruiting for.
I’ve also received nothing in writing as yet from my employer in regards to a contract or job description, although my new manager (who will have my current job title) is expected to start in January. It’s also worth mentioning that I haven’t ever even seen a JD for my current role (as I was promoted) but did sign a contract a few years ago.

So my question is - is it a case of my employer just being inconsistent and maybe a few admin !!!!-ups which is ok, or have they actually done anything wrong in changing the advertised job title to my current one?

Thanks for any help!

Well they haven't done anything wrong in hiring a person with the same job description as you. You say you are not taking a pay cut, and not taking on extra work, so I'm not too sure what the issue is.
  • job titles are generally meaningless so I wouldn't read too much into it - why don't you ask your current manager / hr to clarify?

  • Thanks for the replies. It's good just to get a sanity check sometimes.
  • Indeed - as a reasonable example I work for a finance director who also has 2 finance directors working for him. We have chains of Vice Presidents 3-4 long in some parts of the businesses and more "head of" chains than you can shake a stick at.

We also have juniors earning more than their bosses due to how the salary bands and bonus structures work but such is the way of the world.
