Stinky curtains!

Options
I moved house 18 months ago and have just had a curtain pole put up on the landing - finally. I brought down a pair of curtains I'd had in the loft and have hung them, but they are a bit stinky! Any suggestions?

Are they machine-washable (and will they fit in the machine)? If not, you could try laying them flat and sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over them to deodourise. Sunlight and fresh air will help too, but perhaps the wrong weather for that at the mo!

Hmmm. Not sure if they're machine washable - I'll have to look in the morning. I don't think they'd fit in my machine though (and I don't have a tumble drier so that would then be the next problem!) I was wondering about just opening the window in milder moments, but it's not looking hopeful for the next few days

Bicarb of soda sprinkled on them, left overnight, vacuumed off... maybe repeat.

    Febreze.

Hang them on the line if it's dry, which is unlilely this week.

hi once I had washed them and dried them I usually put a small amount of fabric conditioner into an old spray bottle that I have kept from cleaning product and washed out properly, and fill up with water give it a good shake and there you have a home made freshening spray.

Every couple of days I spray my curtains and they stay fresh until the next wash.

This is a fraction of the cost of other sprays like febreeze etc.

Best bet is letting them blow outside on the line I think, nothing like a bit of fresh air! It shouldn't take too long so you might be able to fit it in between showers. There's a good breeze blowing around our way right now.

:) I'd second this, although we're not at the optimum time of the year for it.

I bought two pairs of curtains secondhand at a bootsale. They'd been stored clean but had acquired that frowsty odour. Pegged them on an outside line and let the sun and the wind do it their stuff and they came up beautifully fresh in 24 hours.

If airing them outside is not an option I would use febreeze.
