I don't use Sage where I work and wouldn't expect a new member of staff to be familiar with our system. Demonstrating an understanding of accounting principles and able to apply what you've learnt to real life is what's important. Networking is a good way to get jobs or work experience as I know someone who got a part-time job in a local accountancy firm through a friend on the same AAT course. So let people know you're looking and you may be suprised to find a partner of a friend/cousin knows of a vacancy. Plus if your not only interested in working in practice then perhaps apply for finance admin roles or other financial related entry level jobs like accounts payable/receivable in all types of medium to large companies including public sector. Also a finance and accounting temp agency might get you a few short jobs that will bulk up your cv.

Decided not to go ahead with it and I've managed to secure a job as an assistant accountant anyway - good advice folks :D

Congratulations! May I ask how you found it and if it's in an accountancy firm?

It was a speculative application to a local tax and accountancy firm - it's only a maternity cover for now but fingers crossed it'll lead to something :)
