Electoral register

We're due to make a mortgage application in the new year although we've found out that we returned the electoral register forms too late.

I spoke to the council and they said that we would not appear on the register until the 17/02/14. I'm worried this will affect our credit search, so do you think it would be worth delaying the mortgage application?

Any advice?

Thanks

If you can wait, then I would, as it is likely to be a problem...

Have you registered for the preceeding 5 years?
  • I had been registered at an address between 06-10 but not since. My partner is an EU citizen but has lived in the UK for two years, so has not been on the electoral register.

Given that you have not been on the electoral roll for the past 3 years and you still arent, I think that may cause you a problem.

Your partner, being an EU citizen and resident in the UK, is allowed to vote, so therefore both of you not having an up to date history on electoral roll is even more likely to cause problems.
  • Yep that's what I'm worried about, more so for my partner than myself as i have a high credit score.

We'd be looking to complete end of March/early April, so potentially waiting until the 17th Feb might be an option?

Lenders will score you themselves based in part on the datasets supplied by the CRA's. Electoral roll registration history for a number of years is a must now for mortgage applications.
  • Well i think i'm resigned to the fact that we won't get a mortgage offer, lesson certainly learnt.

Can you obtain a letter from your local council stating that you have registered and the date you will appear on the register from?

Things are a lot stricter now, but I know I was asked to do this by a building society in 2004.
  • I currently have an email, so might ask if they can send a letter too, hopefully that helps with the application.

Just done my credit check and found out i had been registered in the electoral roll from 05-12, so just not at my current address.

I don't think that will be as bad. There is a reason that people always ask for 3-5 years of previous addresses. They want to check you are on the voters roll.
