got some carrots and sprouts from our local shop. Bit of a waste of time with the sprouts as the best by date is the 22nd and the carrots is the 23rd.

Can use the carrots before Christmas day but don't think I will get away with using the sprouts. Sprout soup anyone?

Blanch them, cool them down quickly, then freeze them.

Why take BB dates on veg so literally?! They're not a 'this will go off date' - they're a made-up advisory date - with emphasis on the 'advisory', and, for veg, on the 'made-up'.

It's a supermarket trick to make you buy more - if you bought them loose in the greengrocers (or indeed loose in the supermarket) there would be no nannying BB date.

Just use common sense. And save money.

Carrots can keep for weeks if kept cool, and sprouts for a week too, if cold. A BB date of 22nd and 23rd wouldn't stop us using them on 25th! We'd probably still be happy using them a week+ later!

Edited to add: If you don't believe me just google it - there's loads of stuff out there on the misconceptions about Best Before dates - here's a link to a site that specialises in it - this page is their one about carrots - which it states will last 4-5 weeks after the Best date - http://www.eatbydate.com/vegetables/fresh-vegetables/how-long-do-carrots-last-shelf-life/

For a change from traditional sprouts, I can recommend Jamie Oliver's 'Brussels with hustle'. You shred the sprouts and cook them with Worcestershire sauce and bacon; delish!

    MERRY CHRISTMAS !

I don't think I've ever looked at a use by date on fruit or veg. If they look just about edible then they get served up in this house!
  • Although saying that, my son ate an old chilled macaroni cheese (use by 7th December) by mistake yesterday and he kept saying it was 'fizzy' and 'horrible'. Not realising it was out of date, I told him not to be so fussy. Felt guilty after lol.....
  • I got given the stink-eye by a woman on the SS checkouts when I asked her if she had heard about it. Went o tobacco counter to get them to scan and check the three bags of veg I had picked up, and they scanned at £1 each, the nice young man on the counter came to fine me later to say that he had asked his manager about it, and they were scanning at 10p earlier, but only on certain dates, and they got cleared very quickly.
