Shampoo for greasy hair

Hi can anyone recommend a good shampoo for greasy hair?
I have to wash my hair everyday and I know this is probably making matters worse but my hair starts going really greasy about 12 hours after I wash it.
Thanks

  • Several options:
Try an SLS free shampoo - less foam, gentler on your scalp.
Using an everyday *really mild* shampoo?
Planning to not wash & let it get greasy for 72 hours (hide if embarrassed)
Use conditioner instead of shampoo ("CO" conditioner-only) washing?

Sounds like you've used full strength shampoo so often that your hair thinks it needs more oil - and that can be gentled back into balance given a bit of time & patience.

Treat your hair & scalp to an oil mask (I use olive oil) until hair goes "stringy" (that's seriously oiled - puts greasy into perspective!), wrap it in a plastic bag & a headscarf to keep it all warm & in place & then wash it all out after a couple of hours.
Just try to wash the olive oil out & then condition it so the hair still has the protection it needs & wants.
  • Is it really greasy or is it just fine and "looks" awful? Mine is fine - it looks like it hasn't been washed for a week the day after I have washed it. I find something that makes your hair "thicker" helps e.g. mousse or other products. I can also just manage the second day using a dry shampoo.
  • Batiste dry shampoo is your friend

  • Neutrogena do one. I haven't tried it through but was looking up greasy hair shampoo the other day as my 11 year old is going through an alway greasy hair phase. Must admit my other two went through a similar phase in early puberty but it did settle down eventually.

The obvious one you already know, don't wash every day, if you can't bear not to then use a very mild shampoo and don't over massage as that stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, cold rinse if you can bear it, lemon rinse, conditioner on the ends only.

I like Naked shampoo (they sell it in Boots) - they do one for sensitive scalp and it's really gentle. My hair can be greasy, or I think it looks greasy, and this shampoo is lovely. They do a conditioner too.

I didn't like this - it made my hair very lank! However my friend swears by it so maybe worth a go.

I do think you have to re-train your scalp out of this...could you alternate normal shampoo and baby shampoo, as it's gentler?

  • My part-time job is to sell rather expensive shampoo, and I get this question all the time - how do I stop my hair getting greasy all the time?

I can honestly say that the best way is to have a "hair detox" - for as long as you can physically manage without wanting to claw your hair out, do not wash it. If you have a few days or a week where you don't need to be presentable, do not wash your hair. You will probably feel a bit disgusting, but your hair needs to get used to not being washed every day. Then after that, wash your hair every two or three days - as long as you can manage. I wash my hair once or twice a week, no more. You'll notice that your hair's in better condition, you'll have less split ends, is less likely to go flat and is generally glossier and healthier looking.

If you're really struggling, use dry shampoo. I've realised that a lot of people don't know how to use dry shampoo properly, so they think it doesn't work. The best way to use it is to hold the can at arm's length, lifting up the hair in sections and spraying in bursts - so instead of one long continuous spray, you continually pump the nozzle so it's coming out in puffs, if you get what I mean. Just keep doing that all over the head. Leave it for about 5 minutes whilst you do your make up or anything like that, then vigorously shake your fingers through your hair and massage it. THEN brush it out! It works wonders, gets rid of any grease and gives you instant volume. I just use Bastiste.

    Hope this helps!
