What if a cheque isn't paid in 'in time'?

Sister dug out a cheque...

Note the 6 months & how we're now past that.

Does she have to get back in touch with HMRC (through which channel as they have a maze of contacts)? Or could she go ahead & cash this?
Or is it case of, tough luck, you had plenty of time?

The 'correct' answer is to contact and request it be re-issued.. Yes you could try and pay it in and it might go through, but it could be later returned unpaid..
  • I had a situation a bit like this with my late mother (but for a much larger sum).
It was a benefit matter not HMRC so I would hope that HMRC is more effective branch of government.
In my case, my mother (ie me) received not just one but then another letter from not one but two fairly senior in the civil servants, via her MP. Both apologising for the continuing mal-administration and saying the matter was in hand and would be corrected.

IT NEVER WAS within the next 4 months and was still outstanding when my mother died.

So I would be interested in how you get on and how much effort was expended to get the result you get.

It will most probably be fine. I've cashed a few from over a year past and the banks didn't notice. Worth a try. Option B is Jobsworth City aka HMRC.

Machine accepted it, so let's see if it gets processed as normal.
