Christmas Turkey Question

Options
Not sure whether this is the right place to post but...

I am purchasing a medium frozen turkey for Christmas (it's the first time I have done an xmas dinner).

What day do you suggest I take it out to defrost?

    Defrosting times
To work out the defrosting time for your turkey, check the packaging for any guidance first. If there aren't any defrosting instructions, use the following times to work out roughly how long it will take to thaw your turkey.
in a fridge at 4ºC (39ºF), allow about 10 to 12 hours per kg, but remember that not all fridges will be this temperature
in a cool room (below 17.5ºC, 64ºF), allow approximately three to four hours per kg, or longer if the room is particularly cold
at room temperature (about 20ºC, 68ºF) allow approximately two hours per kg
When your turkey is fully defrosted, put it in the fridge until you're ready to cook it. If this isn't possible, make sure you cook it immediately.

If you are buying a frozen turkey then I am almost certain there will be instructions on the packet.

Where are you planning on getting one from?

To give you an idea, ours is currently sitting in our freezer. I bought it from Sainsburys, the size is classed as small, serves 4-7, weight is 2.6kg- 3.8kg. It isn't an exact science, clearly! :D

This says defrost for 38hrs in a fridge at 4c.

We always take ours out the night before Christmas Eve and it sits on the kitchen worktop. I've never defrosted a turkey in the fridge. I wouldn't have the room.
  • OK I took mine out late Saturday afternoon with a view to cooking it tonight. It defrosted at room temperature by Sunday and I put it in the fridge, will this be ok to cook this afternoon??

    No instructions on packaging
