Searching for a Job in the run up to Christmas

  • Keep your head up, you just never know.

I thought I wouldn't be hearing anything for the couple of weeks, then bang, had a phone call this morning from a company who interviewed me a couple of weeks ago, asking if I would come for a one at a different site on 27/12.

If you've got a lot of bar experience, why not ask around the local pubs or restaurants? You never know, someone might just be short staffed (especially with New Year approaching.)

Well it's been a few weeks after Christmas. I've done everything I can, registered for all the appropriate benefits. Set out a plan to apply for different tiers and types of job, and written and published a CV suitable for that type of work. Registered with Temp agencies, networked, put my CV in, registered & applied for over 50 jobs, used Social Media, used Word of mouth - and as of yet, bar a couple of promises for interviews, nothing has come up. I'm applying for roles across the UK too so not tying myself to one spot - its a very distressing situation I must say.

What I've found really surprising, is I have to take time out to remind myself I've done nothing wrong & I'm not a bad person. It's amazing how one feels when you find yourself needing a job, experiencing rejection and having to claim benefits etc, that you start to feel like you're a bad person.
  • I'm quite surprised really, I thought there were plenty of IT jobs around

What sort of work do you do? Have you looked into contracting?

    Hi

Yeah I'm applying for contracting roles also, just hard going. I do IT Management/IT Project Management that kind of thing. But I've got ten years of hands-on skills to, so just need to keep pushing on I guess
  • Shame, i just checked and we're not hiring any PMs at the moment; it's all product specialist roles at the moment.

There's tonnes of PM jobs on Linkedin, I guess you'd probably need to head towards your industry specialism.

Are you signed up with an agency such as Hays? They do a lot of IT
