Projects for 2014.............

What's anyone doing next year then, the ones I'm considering are;

- install an immersion heater and supply to hw cylinder, and then a immersion2
- insulate between roof rafters in loft
- draughtproof side door
- LED light bulbs

After that I'm pretty stumped for ideas, don't think there's anything else:)

    Make more roof.

My project for the new year is (amongst other things)

This is a 5l vacuum flask.
Some measurements indicate it loses around 4W of heat at 100C.
I am adding a 12kW, and a 500W element into it (the neck is wide enough).
The 500W will be run from any solar excess - the 12kW as a tiny hot water tank and instant water heater.
This should slash around 70 quiddish from my water heating bills.

I wonder if there is some way to reduce the size of the image - it looks almost life size!

The porch needs doing, the door and frame are rotted. I've got new ones in the garage, if it was the front of the house where people can see it i would have done it by now, but being around the back it keeps being put off. Definite get it done but not until the weather is better in the Spring.

The remaining jobs for us are to replace the first generation UPVC double glazing. A lot of the frames are warped so the closing panes don't fit snuggly - I was standing in the shower this morning and it was like a gale blowing round the bathroom. I'll look into whether they can be repaired first but I think they are going to have to go so it'll be the most efficient I can afford.

That might not make in 2014 but pretty much definitely on the list for next year is a MVHR system. We're putting in an ensuite by carving off the end of our master bedroom. That gives us a once in a lifetime chance to box in ducting in hidden positions to get to downstairs so as awareness of damp in air tight homes grows, it seems sensible to have a comprehensive solution whilst we have the chance. It should also mean that nice heat from showering etc that currently just gets vented via extractor fans will be recovered to keep the house warm.

One project for 2014 is to put a lightweight insulated door in the front hall, so as not to waste heat in the stairway.
Maybe another job will be to build a conservatory.
Another would be to dig up a bit more of the lawn to grow more veg.
And I have the makings of a heat recovery system but....

Around Nov/Dec last year we fitted LED bulbs instead of the 50W halogens and converted remaining bulbs to low energy. I reckon we are around 500 kWh lower now this year than last, the majority of which is likely to be due to this change.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

We're fitting new double glazed windows to our home, which will make a huge difference as our current ones are appallingly drafty. I'll also finish off a long-term project in our master bedroom, which has seen the installation of wood fibre internal insulation, acoustic rockwool in the floor/ceiling voids and LED spotlights (amongst other non-energy efficient improvements).

I'm also planning on moving our heatbank so that it is above the boiler stove. With the recent news reports of recent storm induced power cuts and possible future 'brown outs', I think it would be better to be able to have hot water and central heating without using an electric pump.

A final project could be the installation of solar panels if we get permission and if my bonus is large enough. I've yet to decide on PV or solar thermal panels.

I went for PV with a solar immersion heater, "in my view" this is a better option than thermal panels although more costly to install.

Our projects for this year are to install IWI in two more rooms (two done already) as part of the redecorating and to replace the back boiler with something more efficient. Aiming to get annual gas consumption down from 9300 kWh to under 7000.

Solar unfortunately is on the back burner (almost wrote back boiler) as our asbestos roof needs replacing first, but hopefully in two years we'll be able to get a mortgage advance for that as we do not have enough equity at the moment for that.

I looked up in the loft the other day and one of the sheets is slightly cracked and damp underneath so I hope it is going to last in the meantime. I think maybe my dad damaged it when he got up to reseal the chimney flue last year, but I don't blame him as it was probably inevitable.
    Solar install June 2022, Bath
    4.8 kW array, Growatt SPH5000 inverter, 1x Seplos Mason 280L V3 battery 15.2 kWh.
SSW roof. ~22° pitch, BISF house. 12 x 400W Hyundai panels
