Inheritance Tax Advisor

Please can anyone suggest to me how to find a good IHT advisor? The main site gives various links but it seems to me that one is then left with little to go on other than geographical area and pot luck. Is there no source of reliable genuine information on experiences of clients? (I view with suspicion the testimonies given on the websites of the Advisors.)

Their professional body is STEP - google and they have a directory.

"Normal" accountants and solicitors also do inheritance tax, but it's a lottery whether they know enough to give you the best advice.

A STEP qualified adviser is a specialist in executorship, trusts and inheritance tax.

If there are no STEP-qualified practitioners near you then also consider using an IFA who is a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers. They are specialists in later life tax planning, expecially IHT. Their website (www.societyoflaterlifeadvisers.co.uk) also has a postcode search tool.

For IHT advice and planning I would recommend consulting a STEP practitioner or IFA ahead of an accountant or solicitor.
  • Many thanks indeed. I was aware of STEP, but really I was seeking some personal recommendations rather than the lottery of making a blind choice. I had not previously heard of the Soc.of Life Advisers, so I will follow the link and see what comes up.
I am living abroad so I have no preference regarding location of advisers within the UK.
Once again, many thanks for your help.
