What has your debt stopped you from doing in life?

I have never been in debt but my OH has never been out of it. I can tell you what his debts did to me.
They stopped me having more than one child, they stopped us getting married, they ensured I had to go back to work full time when my son was 5 weeks old as we had no money (I thought his money was going on paying back debts - WRONG!).
I live with all these regrets now & I'm too old to put them rightTallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0 -
Me, Lots of things too. I have no money left now until the end of December when my Husband gets paid, so Christmas is cancelled! and yes I'm sick and fed up to the back teeth.LBM 10/9/13 £40,571 (SCARY). NOW DECEMBER 2016 £31,805.
PROUD AND STILL SCARED BUT PLODDING.

our debts have stopped me doing so many things.
The main one being having a family. We can't have kids and so adoption was our only avenue but no adoption agency or social worker will consider us while we are in so much debt.
I got into debt at 18 through pushy and persuasive banks and am now 34 and still paying it off. My husband is just the same and between us, we still have another 5 years to go on our DMP.
No holidays, a car that is falling to bits, a house that is in serious need of repairs not to mention decorating. No new clothes or haircuts and living on supermarket basics brands despite us earning almost 60k between us.
I fear in 5 years once the debt is gone and another 2/3 years for us to save up and do the repairs on our house that we will be too old to adopt the baby we long for. This is of course presuming we can pay it all off in the 5 years CCCS forecast of course, once interest rates go up so will our mortgage payments and we have both been made redundant twice in the last few years (have found new jobs) which always messes things up and there is no guarantee it wont happen again.
I try not to be so gloomy and down about it all but it eats away at me.
The stress of it all before we started the DMP made me so so ill my parents asked my husband if I was dying, I was skeletal and did not sleep and would just blank out sometimes with worry. Looking back I don't honestly know how I got through it.Arrrrggghhhhhhhh.......what have I/we done?????

Hi hon - when we started debt busting this time last year almost, we had around £60K debt too. We haven't entered into a DMP but trying to clear it on our own. We earn about £68K u but our plan is to try and pay it within 3 years. It's going to be tough but we will get there. I'm sure you will hit your target, you sound like you are doing all the right things. I really hope that you get the baby you long for, you never know it might be worth speaking to your Local Authority. You may be eligible for long term fostering with a view to adoption in a few years time.

Oh shopnomore xxx
I am convinced you will pay it off. I have been here years and seen people do it. It can be done. It will be done.

I generally don't enjoy life, even on good days there's a little black cloud floating overhead if that makes sense. It's always in the back of my mind.
Financially there are a lot of things we can't do, but my oldest child is 14 years old and we have only ever been on one family holiday and that was a weekend at my dads and was before my 6 year old was born.
My 10 year old son said to me a week or so ago, "Mum, are we poor people?", his reasoning was that we can't afford to do things or buy things. That was a telling moment for me.LBM Dec 2013 ~ DFD Sept 2016! My debts stopped me getting a job I enjoyed and made me stay in a job I hated and was so totally miserable in just because the money was good and I needed to pay my debts as soon as I could so I could leave the job and find something I enjoyed closer to home.
My house is falling apart and my heating doesn't work but now that I've cleared my debts, I'm putting money aside now to have my house done up and actually enjoy living here for once!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 20140
