I have a large sum of money to be paid in Jan 2015 as the result of CGT. I want to make as much money on the sum of money ( without losing it! ) before it has to be paid. Does anyone have any bright suggestions as to where I could invest / what to do with it in the 12/13 months that I still have the money?

Hi there, 12 to 13 months is a very short term as far as investments go. And considering you have no capacity for loss on these funds (i.e. you can't afford to make a loss), my recommendation would be to keep it simple and stick with cash.
Interest rates are very poor at the moment but as an example you can get 1.90% with Investec (12 month fixed term, £25k minimum deposit). As it's a large sum you may want to consider dividing it between a few banks/providers, as only the first £85k is protected (by FSCS compensation) in each institution.0 -
There are several articles on savings on the main site which it would be well worth reading: there are some current accounts paying more than 1.9% atm.Signature removed for peace of mind0

There are several current accounts paying interest on a 5 figure balance.
Such as the Santander 123 account plus stories of "investors" opening more than one such account and round tripping a considerable amount of money, to qualify for the interest in each account.0
