career suggestions

hello!

while not particularly young, and neither too old, I am at the point where I need to make a career change

can you suggest me please professions that are pretty easy to enter (ie. many vacancies and few applications, relatively) and have the prospect of a high income?

thanks!

Like I said on the DFW thread. Clinical waste collector, grave digger, cesspool emptier, voids clearer to name a few. All high risk jobs but do carry good wages

    Hello Savier,

That is certainly an interesting question you’ve posed and it seems to have attracted a lot of interesting replies.

Ok, so you’re trying to figure out how you might choose a new career path. From what I can tell, it appears it’s important for you to be able to find a new role which has the potential to attract a high salary in the future. I also understand you’re looking at this from a certain angle; you’re trying to figure out which roles might be easier to move into.

When trying to figure out which are easier to get into there are a few things you might like consider. Roles are usually easier to get into for a few reasons. For example, roles which don’t require many initial skills or experience might be easier to get into. However, saying that, there might be a high level of competition from other people who are approaching their career in a similar way. Another thought is that the more specialised a role, it usually fits that there is less competition for these roles. However, in this case, specialised roles usually require specialised training and/or experience, which is another factor to consider.

Have you thought about whether you’re open to spending time gaining skills through training or volunteering before finding a new role? Perhaps you’d prefer to use your existing skills and experience to make the move? This are important factors to think about as they will help you narrow down your options and consider which type of roles you could be open to.

To me it appears the suggestions posters have mentioned so far have a couple of things in common. For example, someone mentioned sales roles which don’t require any previous experience. I wonder if these have been suggested as the poster has seen many of these roles advertised in their area? Have you noticed from vacancies if certain roles tend to appear frequently in your area?

The other theme I noticed is that some of the roles suggested appear to be roles which might not be the most glamorous; roles which involve working in unfavourable conditions or environments. I wonder if these have been suggested, as there is an assumption that these might attract fewer applicants. I’m not sure if this is the case, by the way, it is something you would need to look into.

Another thought is you might find the UK Shortage Occupation List published by the UK Border Agency useful. This lists occupations which are in demand in the UK. Hopefully this might give you a few ideas about specialist roles you could consider training in. Each of the Job Profiles on the National Careers Service website also includes salary expectations, routes in and labour market information for a whole host of roles. The labour market information is usually also broken down into regions.

You could also look at your decision from another angle. You could think about other factors you would like to take into account when weighing up ideas. For example, have you thought about what motivates you in the world of work in addition to salary? What about the skills you’d like to use or the environment in which you’d prefer to work? The National Careers Service’s Skills Health Check can help you begin to get to the bottom of these and help you figure out which roles could match your skills and interests.

Hopefully there are a few things here which can help you to get you started with planning your change in direction.

    All the best,
