A plea from a frozen babysitter

Am just warming up after a freezing evening babysitting till 2 am. Can I please ask parents to remember to let the babysitter either know how to override the timer for the heating or offer an alternative method of heating.

It probably never occurs to them that their timer is set to switch the heating off at 9.30 cos they go to bed at 10 normally whereas I sat there for another 4 hours last night with my coat wrapped round me.

I'm going to remember to ask next time I'm babysitting somewhere (and this is the second time in different houses it's happened in the space of a couple of weeks) but it would be great if parents could remember too. It wasn't even cold outside but by 2 I was pretty frozen.

Thanks folks

Liz

Could you not text the parents, "everything fine here but how do I turn the heating on?"

I remember babysitting in a house where they had built me a lovely roaring coal fire ... problem was, I had absolutely no idea how to keep it going, I'd only been in houses with central heating up to that point!

Also, remember to discuss what you want the babysitter to do about answering the phone: Last Christmas we went out on the works do, and someone called us within a few minutes of us leaving at7.30 ish. The babysitter let the call go to answerphone, and then sat with the wretched machine beeping insistently every 5 seconds until we came home about 1 am :o
  • If we babysit for our grandchildren at their home. , we always dress for it being cooler than at our place . Hate being cold . Make sure you ask for heat next time and take extra layers !

I used to take a blanket with me in a backpack.

Its horrible to feel uncomfortable, whether that be too hot or too cold. I make a point of showing any baby sitter how to work the heating and say they can adjust the temperature using the gage in the hall. There are also blankets in the basket by the fire and they know to help themselves to hot or cold drinks. I go out expecting them to take good care of my children, so it is only common courtesy that I should make them feel welcome, at ease and happy in my home.
