Reserved on service but not on seat!

Just booked an advanced ticket off redspottedhanky.

On one leg of the journey my reservation details are

You have reserved a place on this specific service, but individual seat reservations are not possible.

I suppose that means that if the train is quite literally full, with no possible way of getting on, I can whip out my booking, collar some likely looking character, and heave him/her off the train, confident that I won't get a slap round the chops for my trouble!

Only if 'likely looking character' doesn't also have a reservation on that service.
Not sure how you can find that out though.

It means that you do not have a reserved seat on that train... just like everyone else on that train.

You all have exactly the same right to any vacant seat... should be fun. :D

Certain routes (usually commuter lines or short routes) don't have seat reservations. Your strategy if used on a hardened commuter might not get you quite the result you're expecting. I can see the headlines now ...... Passenger with sense of entitlement tossed off train by enraged regulars................Safe travels ;)

I know most short routes don't have seat reservations. Usually the reservation on those routes is 'none'.

I was trying to figure out what's special in a not-so-special way about this one :)

I will take a guess and say that you have booked with an operator who does not do seat reservations, but there are some exceptions. As I don't know which service it is, I cannot definitively say.

IIRC when I booked the 25p each way London to Birmingham tickets, they said something like that. Your advanced ticket got you onto the train, but not a seat reserved.
  • There's I think one train operator that doesn't do seat reservations. However they will have to have some way of limited ticket numbers on Advance tickets, which are quota-limited, and that is done using the seat reservation system. Hence you will be booked to a particular train, but the guard won't put out reservation labels on the seats and you aren't allocated to a seat.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • It maybe that there are seat reservations but all possible reservations are taken. I had same message booking last Christmas for a train that ended up very overcrowded, and I had only booked a few days before.
