Just a couple of pointers, as someone has already said most women photograph better wearing make up, even if you don't normally do so. Eye liner or pencil, mascara and tidy or slightly pencilled in eyebrows with a little highlighter on the brow bone, make sure your lipstick choice does not make teeth look yellow (some do) and lastly a little blusher or shader to define cheek bones.

If you know the "colour me" principal wear next to your face a colour that lifts you, some of my favourite colours make me look like a corpse and I can only wear them away from my face. If you are not sure, grab a handful of items (scarves, tops) and take them to a mirror in good natural light and try a few things.

Good luck I am sure that they will turn out great - do let us know how you get on.

  • A good primer will be your best friend for the day, you want a brightening one that will photograph well and not give flashback, I would recommend MAC strobe cream or EL Spotlight, a worth while investment for special occasions too.

I went to a family gathering recently, and thought i'd been a bit heavy on the powder foundation. On the pictures though I had a fantastic complexion and glow!
  • I got DH to take hundreds of photos til I found one I could live with. Any time I've had professional shots done I've not liked them.

Mind you he has a decent camera and had enough patience to do it!

Talk to the photographer about if he knows any makeup artists. Some won't cost a lot, especially if he knows of students etc who'd like some practise for a fairly basic job. Or see if local colleges have any students who are doing makeup.

The right amount of eyeliner etc can make a huge difference to photos, as can the right products - a lot of liquid foundations don't photograph well, a makeup artist will know the best products.

A good photographer will be able to get the best photos out of people who aren't keen on having them taken - half their job is sorting the people.

Have your head slightly to the side, slight or full smile depending on what you prefer, pull your tongue into the roof of your mouth (this hides any double chin!), shoulders back, head high. Oh, and my wedding photographer recommended the Tyra Banks "smize" for face shots and its quite effective.

Full body: apparently a hand on the hip or waist breaks your body up so visually it looks smaller.

    Works for nights out too.

Thanks everyone. Photoshoot has now finished and certainly on his camera some of them looked OK but I am waiting for the final versions to come over by email.

I ended up taking littlerat's advice, and he did bring a make up artist with him, and that I think was money very well spent, as once she had done the make up, he took a number of test shots which they looked at together, then she got more makeup out to cover any blemishes, cut out shine, etc. She also used loads more make up than I would have put on, but it didn't look very heavy in the photos, though i wouldn't have gone to the supermarket in the middle of the day like that!

He was also quite good about suggesting poses, in terms of tilt your head this way, that way, up down, etc. Lots of it I thought at the time was really exaggerated and artificial but did work quite well I must admit on film. His top tip was to wear high heels. I was in my bare feet as it was just a head and shoulders shot, but he said high heels would completely change the posture of the head and shoulders and it did seem to work.

    Am glad its over though!

Glad my advice helped :D Yes, makeup photographs very differently than you'd expect. I'm very into photography and quite interested in make-up so have read up on both :D

Glad it's done for you, hope you love the final results :)
  • The SPF in foundations create a kind of flash back making your complexion totally change for the worse.
The right base, bit of practice with contouring and highlighting (try Youtube gossmakeupartist), good pop of colour to suit your eyes and softly line lips with a nude pencil or colour to match lipstick.
Know where to put your concealer, which one is used for which job and which suits your skin in texture.
Also, the main thing is for anyone is to keep your skin as good as it can be. Skincare doesn't have to be top end, most of the top end stuff I don't rate at all. A good scrub and a slap of moisturiser to suite skin and you're away :)

The thing is that how much ever I try to look bad in photos, the pic comes out good only. It's just that I'm very photogenic. However, do have a good hairdo done for you and see to it that you've clean shaved your beard as well. And always have a good smile when you're getting your photo clicked.

:D the beard would explain the poor photos :lol
