Sorry to sound quite negative on this but I am looking at it from an "Outsider" looking in (ie. someone working in the Private Sector)
If you are not already institutionalised in the ways of the Public Sector then don't expect much !!
From a couple of experiences of a family member,
    • Don't press to much on any controversial issues which you know they wont agree with but which every other normal person can see the benefit off !!
    • Brush up on Public Sector buzz words.
    • Brush your teeth before hand and prepare for some serious A$$ Kissing !!
    Finally,
If you notice a seemingly great rapport between a candidate and any of the interview panel, be aware that person already has the job in the bag and they are just going through the motions "FACT" !!
  • lol - thanks for these - I am already in the public sector (for my sins) so am well used to all those things warmhands :D
    Thanks for the advice though.
think it'll just be to get a look at me to see that I dont have 2 heads and maybe run through my quals......

Is it in a Faculty or central admin department?
    Val :)
  • It's in central admin
  • Have answers prepared for all of the points on the essential and desirable criteria list and be prepared to say those things - ideally different examples than you used on the forms. I think public sector interviews these days are very mechanical (esp with fair employment legislation) and you need to literally tick all of the boxes to have a chance.
  • ......... you need to literally tick all of the boxes to have a chance.
Shame you have to already be in the public sector to know what these boxes are. I've yet to meet a "normal" (i.e. not a mate or associate of some councillor or MLA) highly experienced person from the Private Sector who has got a senior role in the Public Sector. Obviously the "Boxes" to be ticked in the Public Sector are quite different to those in the Private Sector..
  • Hi
I have worked at UU, so thought I'd come out of lurkdom to try to help.
The interview will be competency based - that means you need to have examples for each of the personnel specification criteria and be able to talk about each of them, because it's unlikely that you will be asked any follow up questions about your examples. A good technique to use to help with talking around your examples is STAR - situation, task, action & result. Most people don't give enough detail on the last part but this key. If you google it you'll get lots more info. There will probably be 3 or 4 people on the panel and it will likely last 20 - 30 mins.
If you don't know the campus leave plenty of time to find the room - that might be the most difficult part of the interview.
    Hope that helps.

Don't knock it. People in the public sector in NI get on average 45% more than those in the private sector.

Best of luck with the interview.

And people working in the Public Sector wonder why those in the Private Sector believe they are on a Gravy Train !!!
