Do any of you guys invest in stocks?

I've got some money in a savings account and Im thinking of stocks but I don't really know where to start.
I know I need a broker and I've heard of a couple but that's about it.

Just wondering what sort of % anyone here have earned

I am investing all my savings into stocks (80%) and bonds (20%). It makes sense for me as I do not need my savings, and won't need to them until I retire.
However, I already have put aside an emergency fund that I keep on my savings account.
Investing your savings only makes sense if you have a medium to long term horizon, and are willing to invest regularly (in order to average the market valuation), and not get depressed when the market loses 5/10 or 15%... see this as an opportunity to continue to buy cheap for the long term.

Invest in low cost ETF (my portfolio replicates the market and costs me 0.19% a year) - no high fees funds from banksters !

Just to make it clear - only invest (especially in stocks) what you do not need in the short term (5+ years) and only when you have a bit of an emergency funds (3months of expenses minimum) set aside

    Hope it helps,

PM me if you need more details

Hello everybody - sorry I haven't checked into this thread in AGES. I run a thread or two on the Debt Free Wannbe board and totally forgot about this one.... As per my sig I am at £2625 which is roughly £375 behind schedule due to bike breakdowns and starting to purchase a few items for my upcoming trip....(British and Aussie Passport and Vaccinations for South East Asia)...

Will try to log in every month though..... £1000 a month and still on target..(ish)..

  • I have taken a step backwards to take 3 forward...savings hit in February. Although got an invoice out that will return net amount of over £800, due to be paid by middle of march. Another invoice out that will return £1,200 net, due by march 14th also. So should get back on track in march hopefully end up at over £3,000 by end march.

  • So, pay day has been and gone...
Didn't manage to add to the £600 I put in at the beginning of February as we are chucking all our spare cash at our up-coming holiday in April.

Just moved £600 for this month into my savings account - hoping this month won't be as tight as February and should be able to add a little extra towards the end of March. Fingers crossed!!

Well done to everyone on savings put away in Feb!!

Parisimonia - £500 for selling old stuff, thats incredible! Well done!
    :j:T

Well I sold over a decade's worth of accumulated stuff so perhaps £500 isn't really so impressive, but I was pleased!! I had a mini tot-up last night and I reckon I'd paid out about £40 for the stuff over the years in 20ps here and 50ps there, so to make £464 profit in one fell swoop was very pleasing!

Unfortunately the loft is now bare so there won't be a repeat performance....

A great start to March (not). Got to my car this morning to set off to work only to find it had been vandalised/hit and the wing mirror was hanging off :( There's been a spat of car vandalism locally hence my suspicion that the same has happened to mine but it was also parked close'ish to a bend that some people race round too fast so someone coming the other way might have had to tuck in quick to avoid an oncoming car. Nevertheless still a frustrating way to start the week/month. Fortunately I managed to order a replacement for £35 on eBay so hopefully that will turn up nice and quick so I can replace it.

Cash set aside for this months holiday and £700 into savings to kick start this month.

I'm falling behind my target which isn't much of a surprise considering I set myself an ambitious target, only to raise it in line with an increased pay package.

Still planning another holiday this year so I'm going to have to get busy and develop a plan to make some extra on the weekends.

I've just changed to a smaller car to help me reach my target this year. I was paying around £300 per month but will only be paying about £155 under the new agreement. My last car was a VW financed through VW finance lease. The payments came out by direct debit around the middle of the month. I swapped cars last weekend and the direct debit for the new car has not appeared on my bank account yet. However I decided yesterday to cancel the direct debit for my old car because I didn't want to have £300 come out of my account and then have the hassle of getting it back again. But now I'm worried I made a mistake of cancelling the old direct debit when the new one isn't there yet. The salesman told me that it's treated as a completely separate agreement to the old one. But surely the new direct debit should be showing on my bank account by now? I'm worried I will get penalised for late payment and that this could affect my credit rating. My husband says the new direct debit will appear in my account any day now but I'm worried it hadn't yet. Could anyone advise please?
