You can get some great bargains, especially in the USA by bidding on Price Line for hotels - I'd highly recommend it. At the other end of the scale, I once stayed in the YMCA in New York! Very basic, but I had a single room and it's in a great position between the UN and the Chrysler Building.Save £12k in 2022 thread #7:

This week has been terrible for me, spending-wise. I need to get a grip! It's as if because i had to spend out a bit, i stopped caring! I bought a bagel for breakfast yesterday (£2) then had lunch with my friend at work (£3). What a waste!
I felt guilty so came home, put £3 in my £ tin and swore that I wouldn't spend unnecessarily again this month.
I WILL REGAIN MY MOTIVATION!!
Why not think about putting a little away for treats like that? For example, put away £5/£10 out of your wages every month specifically for that treat. With £10 you could do it twice a month! You wouldn't feel guilty if a treat allowance was built in to your budget. I get my hair done once every two months and that is my treat (I seriously do nothing else, I am that boring!) I look forward to it and I don't feel bad about spending the money (even though it is a little bit more than £10)

Can safely put down £810 for February. £500 normal savings, £110 interest, and £200 additional. Latter could be £300, but setting aside £100 for new clobber for golfing holiday next month (so I'll have some catching up to do in April lol).“In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing at all.” - Roosevelt0

Do you know, I never even thought about building these things into the budget and I have no idea why!! I also get my hair done once every two months which is a bit of an extravagance but it's my treat. You're right though- if I just put away £10 per month into a side account for little treats I wouldn't feel bad about having a treat now and again.

Thanks JoJo and tara. Agreed I could spend less often but my policy is I can't take it with me and enjoy seeing the family get pleasure form what I can give them now. Get-together's with the whole family are virtually impossible, S-in-L works 6 days a week, DD has a degenerative illness and the DGD all live/work elsewhere. Christmas is the time we all look forward to, it's the best as we can all guarantee to be together
Today was a nsd/npd, that's 10 so far this month. After a little juggling I've scraped together £280 to put into the savings fund which is just under my goal total for the month. After a disastrous January I'm pleased with how Feb going so far.0 -

You need to get whatsapp. Your texts will be free. This is how I stay in touch with my family who are scattered on different continents. My contract was costing me a fortune (and I never came close to my limits), so I stopped it and now pay £10 per month on a rolling monthly contract. Saves me almost £300 per year.

On the upside, I worked a ton of overtime this month so I will probably be able to add to my savings as well as overpay on my mortgage at the end of the month. I also go to Germany for 2 weeks on 1 March and that is never cheap ...............
Happy saving everyone,
We stayed at a great little hotel on 5th Avenue called Hotel 373. The rooms were compact but spotless and comfortable. It's right by the Empire State Building and a short walk from Times Square. Worth a look, think they have rooms for about £90 a night...0 -
Managed to add another £900 to February's money taking me to £2500 for this year so far and now I just need to find another interest-paying account pretty quickly.

I'm feeling very disheartened today. I've just had to fork out £322 on a completely unexpected expense (I don't want to go into details as it will just make me cross again).
My savings target was £12k and I've been trying extra hard to save extra on top of the necessary £1k per month because I know I will need to replace my car this year. But this added expense really screws my plan up and can't see how I'll make it up.
I've also had a row with the other half and am generally just feeling very sorry for myself.
Need to give myself a kick up the backside. I think I'll head over to the competitions board - perhaps I'll win something worth £322 :rotfl:0
