Just out of interest, is everyone saving up for something in particular (eg. holiday, house deposit etc) or are the savings more of a rainy day fund? OH and I are getting married next year :j and also our house really does need a new bathroom :o so my savings from this year will probably go towards those 2 things.

We are saving a deposit for a bigger house. Ideally I would like to save at least £20k before we start looking. Also we want to save at least 6 months worth of one our salaries as an emergency fund. Not sure how long this will take. I have had a couple of loans that I have been paying off to free up cash to put away as savings plus I have a VW golf on lease. I am going to downsize to a polo soon and reckon that should save me another £200 a month in repayments. Good luck with the wedding plans :)

  • £1700 this month..but it inlcudes an amount from December too. Just doing it on my own so this house deposit seems so far away, but its amazing to see how much some of you have saved! Great motivation!

Now to make what I have last until the next payday...only 23 days to go hehe [STRIKE][/STRIKE]
  • Is it too late to join this challenge? I used to do the DFW challenges and found them really motivational so I'd like to get involved in a savings challenge now!

My goal is £6k for 2014. In January I saved £300 so below target after the car broke down. To compensate I've done some overtime this month that I'll get paid at the end of February.

I do also save into pots for car tax/insurance and presents but I won't be counting these as they'll be spent in 2014.

Hope to enjoy saving with you!!

In 2012 I saved for the sake of saving. Last year I saved for Little Miss Gap's and my holiday this year. I counted it in the challenge because I saved it all during 2013. This year I am still saving for the holiday (have used almost all the savings from last year to pay the majority of it *faints*, just saving the remaining total) but not counting it in the challenge as I will be using it during this year. This year's counted savings are towards buying out the Housing Association's share of my shared equity property so I guess it is like a house deposit, only backwards as I already have the house
I am saving an emergency fund separately as I may well have to dip into it during the year.

So, 22p to savings to start February. Every little helps and all that!
    Mortgage at 12/07/2022 = £175,000
    Mortgage today = £161,690.76
    300 271 payments to go.
    House buyout fund £21,000/£40,000
  • Hi, Am I too late to join the list?
I have just got engaged, and my Fiance and I will be paying for the wedding ourselves, so extra motivation and idea's will really help.
I have set myself a target of £3000 by December 2014, I would like more but I don't want to get disheartened if I miss my goal.
    Thanks
Saving for 2015 Wedding, aiming for £3000 by December 2014.
    This month: £350
    Total: £850 / £3000....£2150 To go! :j

    Debt Total: £12063:eek:

Last year I saved up towards my rainy day fund. I topped it up with my savings from Jan 2014. From Feb 2014 I am starting to save towards my longer term savings - ideally savings that will build up over the next 10 - 15 years that will provide us with some financial independence.

I started last year's 'Save £12k in 2013' mid way through the year, the aim of that was to save up 6 months salary as a 'S.Y.F - Sod You Fund'. That is now done and it feels good to have that money in the bank.

I have now just saved up two month's salary as a 'Rainy Day Fund' for emergencies and unexpected bills or expenses, this is in a easy-access account, should I need to use it.

Next on my list is to sort out a pension, to look into buying my own home and to start investing. Not much really, and these are not in any particular order! I need to do some proper research into both the pension and mortgage in particular, but in the mean time I am simply saving money.

There is a lot of helpful info on these boards and I will attempt to work my way through it. I suspect my next move should be a pension, but we'll see!

I tend to save up for my holidays throughout the year, and then book and pay for them at the time of booking. I thankfully have a newish car that is all bought and paid for, plus my credit card (to use in emergencies) is clean.

I am a little late in getting into saving compared to some people, but I am now raring to go and have got the bit between my teeth. These boards are really encouraging, not to mention motivating.
