Hi Sazzie
Good point you raise here. It's fair to say that progress on regulating fee-charging debt management companies (DMCs) has been fairly slow over the years. An industry protocol was brought in earlier this year which may help to improve things. The protocol includes the following requirement:
Subscribers to the DMP Protocol will alert their clients, both orally and in writing, to the fact that free-to-consumer debt advice and debt management services are available. This will be done in an easily understood format, will be neutral in expression and will include a link to the Money Advice Service website on all providers’ homeweb pages.
At present, there are 17 DMCs listed on the Money Advice Service website as signed up to this protocol.

Step Change all the way for me although to be fair they are the first and only folk I've used but they've been friendly, informative and supportive all the way!

I've been dealing with StepChange and have found them great - but a bit of why I went to them was because when I first spoke to Payplan it looked like my total debts were just slightly under 5k (as it happens, they're a little over that) and payplan said they don't deal with such 'low' debt amounts.
Even when it transpired my debts were a few hundred higher and therefore took me into their threshold, I didn't want to use them as their advisor has implied they were my only choice saying 'you do know other companies would charge you for this' when I said I was going to check with other orgs... not impressed!
And neither was he when I pointed out a number of other agencies who do indeed offer free help.On the up
