They want to give us all a paycut, and backdate it.

I'd point out to them that as I pay 10% of my pay to get to/from work, that'd have to be the first cutback I made. Then stomp off and buy a paper.

And don't forget to pick up your P45 on the way if you act according to this advice.

Not true for everybody. The cost of getting to/from work and having your hair done and some work-suitable clothes can be major. For many having the rent and council tax paid by the dole and £71 bunged in your hand every week's not a lot different to working.

Also, being in work gives you less time to look for a new job and less opportunity to attend interviews as it can be impossible to book the time off (especially at short notice).

I would expect them to already have suitable work clothes , having your hair done ? strange one

How many would get their rent and council tax paid , not many I would guess

I would echo the more sensible answers, accept the paycut........does it come with less hours? , and then start looking for another job . Although it doesnt neccessarily mean the company will go bust

As has already been stated, I believe they can ask to backdate the cut but you can refuse to allow them.

You could consider negotiating a 10% cut in hours to match the 10% cut in salary, which would give you some time to apply for other jobs and attend interviews.

Are you a union member? If so you will be able to access legal advice via your union. If the union is recognised by the employer they should also be consulted about the proposals - you will obviously have more bargaining power too if this is the case.

If you choose to accept any cut, make sure the agreement is put in writing and be sure that things like amount, duration, reduction in hours, compensatory pay/leave after the reduction ends, etc etc is clearly stated in the agreement.

Ultimately it sounds like the company's up the creek and you'd be better off elsewhere. But don't let them walk all over you in the meantime.

    Good luck!
  • If they then made everyone redundant and paid out redundancy payments the amount that people would get would be based around the new, lower salary. They could just be asking you all to take a paycut and then start laying people off.
