Good time to become a mortgage broker?

Hello,
I am contemplating a change of career. I am 26 and have seriously been thinking about training to become a mortgage broker, with the eventual hope of setting up on my own once i have gained some experience.
Is the current market currently good to be working in? Obviously there seems to be a slight slow-down in the market, does this make it harder and more competitive to win business?
What kind of earnings can be made once up and running and reasonably successful?
Any tips/info much appreciated
